Bethpage High School Students
Accept Rachel's Challenge
On Wednesday, February 1, 2006, Bethpage High School hosted a special
program entitled "Rachel's Challenge," a presentation geared to inspire,
instruct, and enable students to bring positive change to their school atmosphere.
Formed by family members and friends of Rachel Scott, the first victim
of the 1999 Columbine school shooting, "Rachel's Challenge" helps to
spread her words of acceptance, tolerance and compassion amongst high
school students. Rachel's sister, Dana Scott, conducted the program at
Bethpage High School. The contents of Rachel's diaries served as the catalyst
to develop the program.
Assemblies were held in the day for 1 lth and 12th graders, and a special
assembly was held for parents in the evening. During the assemblies, students
were exposed to a multi-media presentation, instructing and encouraging them
to bring about a positive relationship with one another. Dana also spoke
directly to Bethpage High School students, delivering several inspiring messages.
Students made the pledge to accept the challenge by accepting their
classmates, communicating with each other, and understanding each other's
dil ferences.
Alter a compelling and motivating assembly and follow-up discussion in
class. 50 student leaders were chosen by their teachers to participate in a
workshop along with select faculty and staff. Dana conducted the workshop,
designed to sustain the momentum of the assembly and spark a "chain reaction"
of kindness among others around school. A banner reading "I Accept
Rachel's Challenge" displayed in the hallway of Bethpage High School has
since been filled with student signatures.
"Rachel's Challenge" illustrates the importance of helping every student
feel connected to his or her school community. Rachel was a kind and compassionate
person, and through her diary writings and actions students are
challenged to instill these qualities in their fellow classmates. The contents of
Rachel's diaries served as the catalyst for her family to develop the program.
Dana also displayed a tracing of Rachel's hands, which Rachel outlined on the
back of her dresser when she was a young girl. Rachel wrote inside the tracing
oi her hands. "These hands will someday touch millions ." Thanks to the
effectiveness of "Rachel's Challenge" they already have.
