SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE
VOL. 42 NO. 37 October 15-21, 2004 FORTY CENTS
iff*fill Honored for Service to
Marine Fitness M*rograwn
Over the years, Bethpage High
School has been involved in the
National Marine Fitness
Competition. Students travel around
the country to compete in different
team and individual events where
they are scored by judges. In the
past, all the scoring was done
manually, that was until last April
when Bethpage resident and
Northrop/Grumman employee Brian
Bofill, brought the scoring system
into the 21st Century.
Brian donated over 100 hours of
his time to a competition he credits
with helping to develop the strong
character in his son, Steven.
"Steven is a good kid," stated Bofill.
"The focus that he gained from this
sport is phenomenal, not only did he
gain focus, but he also, grew as a
person both mentally and
physically."
With Mr. Bofill's new
computerized scoring program, as
individual scores are added into the
system the lowest score is dropped
and the team score is automatically

updated. Coaches across the
country will soon be able to
download the scoring system from
the Marine Fitness website
(http://www.marineyouthfoundation.
org) along with the rules and
techniques for judging.
"This new system is absolutely
incredible," said Mike Fenster, high
school Physical Education teacher
and former Marine Fitness Coach.
"Brian is a rare and fine man. The
hours that he donated are
unbelievable. He has given back to,
not only Bethpage, but to the entire
National program."
To honor Mr. Bofill's contribution
to the Marine Fitness Competition,
the Marine corps League presented
him with a Distinguished Service
Award. "It is a great system and we
appreciate everything that Brian has
done," stated Paul Hastings,
executive director of Marine Youth
Foundation and a retired member of
the United States Marine Corps.

Bethpage United Methodist
Church announces the formation of
"Friends of Bethpage Methodist
Cemetery Committee." The
cemetery is located on Route 107
where Wantagh Avenue and Central
Avenue meet Route 107 in
Bethpage. It is owned and operated
by the Church.
The Church is seeking to make
contact with all those persons
whose family members and friends
are interred. Beyond that,
membership is encouraged for
persons who find the Cemetery's
history important and worth
preserving.
The committee will be asked to
assist the trustees in gathering the
resources to upgrade maintenance
and care. Among those resources
will be persons and organizations
that can form a community
constituency to advocate to improve
and protect Bethpage Methodist's
Cemetery's continued existence as
open, ecumenical and historic holy
burial ground.
Bethpage Methodist Cemetery is
historically significant as an early
Long Island religious site. It was
begun in 1836 and now is 168 years
old. The Church was built that year
by its first pastor, Joshua Powell.
Then in 1920 the church building
was moved to its present location of
Broadway, Bethpage, south of
Central Avenue, and later
expanded. The history of Bethpage,
Plainedge and surrounding areas is
preserved here. There are graves of
Veterans from the Civil War, WWI,
and WWII. Numerous interesting
inscriptions and familiar family names
are represented.

Flu Shot Shortage Information and Updates
Due to the reduced supply of influenza vaccine, the Nassau County
Senior Citizen Flu Immunization Program has been temporarily postponed.
If sufficient vaccine becomes available, we will continue with the scheduled
clinics and reschedule those which were canceled. While the Nassau
County Department of Health is seeking alternative sources of the vaccine,
it is working with the New York State Department of Health on a strategy to
assure the best use of existing, limited supply of the vaccine. The health
departments are asking those persons and organizations who may have an
existing supply of vaccine to use it judiciously and follow the CDC's
recommendations. The CDC's interim recommendations for those who
should be vaccinated include:
*AII children aged 6-23 months.
* Adults 65 and older.
*Persons aged 2-64 years with underlying chronic medical conditions
*Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season.
'Residents of Nursing Homes and chronic care facilities.
'Children aged months to 18 years on long term aspirin therapy.
'Health care workers with direct patient contact.
*Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children less than 6
months old.
Other vaccination recommendations include:
Healthy persons 5-49 years of age who eligible, are encouraged to
receive the intranasally administered live, attenuated influenza vaccine.
