Marc Khan Memorial
Volleyball Tournament
Brings the Community Together
Rich Althaus and Executive Director Tom Bruno (left) of the
Hicksville Youth Council Boys and Girls Club with Marc Khan's
parents Nancy and Frank Khan during the Marc Khan Memorial
Volleyball Tournament.
Sixteen teams comprised of community members, Bethpage
faculty, and friends and family of Marc Khan's played for a good
cause at the Marc Khan Memorial Volleyball Tournament.
Marc Khan was an outstanding
individual involved in athletics,
Student Civic activities, and
numerous activities at Bethpage
High School and in the community.
He was a young man who was proud
of where he came from and touched
the lives of so many people through
his efforts of volunteerism and the
overall way he treated people. Marc
could often be found spending his
free time organizing charity events
to assist people in need. Tragically,
Marc was taken from us last year in a
car accident that also took the lives
of fellow Bethpage High School
students Anthony D'Amico and
Andrew Nardone. Although he is no
longer with us, Marc's spirit,
generosity, compassion and
enthusiasm carry on through his
family, friends, and classmates.
In the spirit of continuing Marc's
legacy, The Marc Khan Memorial
Volleyball Tournament was
established last year. This year, 16
teams comprised of local teens and
community members, Bethpage
School District faculty and staff, and
friends and family of Marc Khan,
gathered at Hicksville High School
on Saturday, August 7, 2004 to
raise money for the Hicksville Youth

22 August 2004 - Redland, PA.
The Bethpage Girls U-13 Wildcats
began their 2004-2005 season with
an impressive tournament
performance as they were
presented as first place champions
competing in the Premier Division in
The 16th Annual Redland Classic in
this weekend's tournament in
Hershey, PA. The team went 3 wins
- 0 losses -1 tie, through the
preliminary, semi and championship
rounds.
Mother nature made playing
conditions quite challenging due to
heavy rain Friday and Saturday. In
game one during Saturday's
downpour, the Wildcats upset the
home team, Redland Extreme by a
score of 3-1 on goals by Danielle
McCaffrey (1), and Briana Hanly (2).
All tournament games were then
pushed to Sunday. That evening,
the girls were treated to Hershey
Park where many experienced the
new Storm Runner Rollercoaster
(Zero-74mph in 2 seconds) plus
other great attractions.
As the tournament resumed,
Sunday featured a preliminary round
game against York United Storm
where the game ended in a 1-1 tie
with the Wildcat goal by Alison
Gronenthal.
That result put the team in the
semi-finals where Wildcats came out
with 1-0 win against Eagle FC
Lightning on a goal by Briana Hanly,
advancing into the finals.
The Wildcats won the
Championship 1-0 against Spirit
United Courage, currently ranked
#11 in Pennsylvania on a goal by
Lucia Montefusco.
The defense led by Melissa
Rohr, Nicole Vescova, Maria
Taliercio, Meghan Campbell, and
guest player Jessie Engelthaler kept
opposing opportunities at a
minimum. There were only two goals
against during the whole
tournament. Goalkeeper Casey
Roland came up with several diving
saves. Her outstanding play at
crucial moments were instrumental
and at times, "game saving."
The offensive unit was quite
impressive as the girls were each
tasked with playing several offensive
positions. The incredible speed and
never ending pressure of forwards
Briana Hanly, Alison Gronenthal and
Lucia Montefusco make it quite a
challenge for the opposition to keep
up with their constant break away
threats.
Midfielders Danielle Romano,
Danielle McCaffrey, Rose Lucidi,
Lisa Campbell and Melanie Zdrojeski
in their aggressive play put constant
pressure on the ball, and made it
difficult for the opposition to mount
any type of offensive threats.
the team is led by Head Coach
Vito Romano and assistant coaches
Dan Campbell and Pete Roland. For
the upcoming 2004-2005 season,
the team is ranked in Division One in
LIJSL. Additional key members of
the team not pictured here include
Codi Reiser, Meghan Carey and
Emily Banes.
Congratulations Bethpage
Wildcats!
