VOL. 42 NO. 30' August 20-September 2, 2004 FORTY CENTS IT WAS JUST
"NOT-FAIR> >
By Linda Mangano
Maybe it was the fact that this
year the Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce Festival began on
Friday the 13n or perhaps it was
just Charlie's (Hurricane
Charlie, that is) fault.
Nonetheless this year's Chamber
Festival just didn 't get off to a
great start. Friday 's weather
brought with it damp drizzle and
at times even heavy rain. By 6:00
pm, start of the Fair the weather
was pretty lousy but we opened
our doors and crossed our
fingers. Low and behold by
approximately 9:00pm the rains
cleared and crowds began to
come. The ticket booth came
alive and it felt great to see die
hard Bethpage residents coming
out to the Festival regardless of
the weather or the threat of
Charlie knocking at our door.
Residents were amazed at the
vocal talent of Mark Buttice and
the Swing Easy Band who eased
the crowd's weather anxiety with
their melodious Sinatra like
quality. They were fabulous. We
were also treated to an
unbelievably talented band
called Radio Daze. Their music
had toes tapping and folks
dancing all night long. They were
an extremely talented classic
rock band.
At closing time, midnight,
Chamber members were all
pretty pleased that in spite of the
poor weather residents came out
in force giving our Friday night a
lot of life. We secured the

our fingers crossed that Saturday
would bring with it better
weather.
Although the skies did seem
brighter on Saturday morning
weather forecasts did call for
Hurricane Charlie to make his
appearance during the day in
Nassau County. Early reports did
call for heavy rain to be starting
between the hours of 3pm-5pm
but the Chamber members were
ready and willing to open our
doors for day two of what we
hoped would be better than the
day before. At 9:30 am the
Chamber Board received a call
from Newton Shows stating that
they did not want to open at all
with the threat of a hurricane
breathing down our necks.
Newton felt that due to the height
of the rides in Bethpage, that
things could become quite
dangerous should the heavy rain
or more importantly the high
winds come. He told us at that
point that he wanted to pack up
and leave the sight.
The Board of Directors quickly
met to discuss the bombshell that
was just dropped on our laps.
After discussing and listening to

though we really didn't have
much of a choice at all. If our
ride promoter was indeed
indicating to us that there was a
danger to festival goers and to his
staff we feIt that we had to abide
bv his decision. No one on the
Chamber Board would ever want
to put anyone in harms way. So
with heavy hearts and reluctance
we allowed Newton shows to
close down and therefore the
Chamber had to cancel the
second day of our summer
Festival.
Of course, Murphy's Law, the
rains never came and the winds
were calm, which really meant
that our Festival could certainly
have taken place. However,
