Avoid Carbon Monoxide
Poisoning
Last week's record cold
temperatures brought tragic stories
of carbon monoxide poisonings
across the New York metropolitan
area. Carbon monoxide is a killer and
your Bethpage Volunteer Fire
Department wants you to stay safe.
Carbon monoxide is the byproduct
of combustion. All fuel
burning appliances emit carbon
monoxide gas. The fuel source can
be wood, oil, natural gas, petroleum
or coal. Carbon monoxide gas is
odorless, tasteless and colorless.
Faulty appliances and improperly
installed exhaust systems permit this
deadly gas to seep into your home.
Common trouble spots include hot
water heaters, gas dryers, gas
stoves, unvented portable heaters,
clogged chimneys, disconnected or
faulty vent pipes and broken flues.
Exposure to carbon monoxide
can result in headache, dizziness,
nausea, fatigue, loss of
coordination, poor judgment and flulike
symptoms. Persons exhibiting
these signs must be immediately
removed to fresh air. Call for
emergency medical assistance.
These patients are in grave danger
and require care. Treatment
includes administration of one
hundred percent oxygen and
perhaps even a visit to the
hyperbaric chamber.
Play it safe! Install carbon
monoxide detectors and inspect all
fuel burning appliances in your
home or place of business.
