VOL. 40 NO. 5 SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE FORTY CENTS
Congressman King Visits Bethpage High School
On January 7, 2002,
Congressman Peter King visited
Bethpage High School to accept a
quilt created by the students of the
Students United organization. As a
result of September 11th, students
formed this club with their Advisor
Jackie Jill-Rito to promote tolerance
and embrace differences. Students
have raised money in a variety of
ways to help the victims of that day.
They have also worked to highlight
what is best about our country. The
quilt was created with the hands of
many people and has messages of
thanks in a wide variety of
languages.
Congressman King talked about
the spirit of America as
demonstrated by these youngsters.
He accepted the quilt in honor of all
those who have fallen as well as
those who have worked so hard to
help others.
"This is a beautiful and
inspirational banner," said
Congressman King, who awarded
Sandeep a Citation from the House
of Representatives, honoring
Bethpage Students United for their
efforts. "It shows to me the strength
of our country, that many cultures
and ethnic groups are bound
together as Americans."
Joining Congressman King was
the former First Lady of New York
State Matilda Raffa Quomo, Founder
and Director of Mentoring USA. Also
in attendance to congratulate
students was newly-elected Town of
Oyster Bay Councilwoman Mary
McCaffery and her husband Jack
McCaffery, a retired Bethpage High
School social studies teacher, as well
as Professor Vito DeSimone,
President of the Italian-American
Educators, and Frank Morrone,
Director of Community Affairs with
the Bethpage Rotary Club.
"This event showed that our
students really care," said Jackie Jill-
Rito, co-advisor of Bethpage High
School Students United and advisor
to the Student Civic Club. "It was a
positive experience for them to be
recognized by leaders, on the local
and national level."
Jackie Jill-Rito, along with
Bethpage High School Political
Activities Advisor Alan Weber and
art teacher Mrs. Cardo helped
coordinate Bethpage High School
Students United. The club's
Executive Board members are:
Danielle Cervelli, Sami Hadi, Tina
Madan, Flavia Marietta, Jill Paff,
Sandeep Pahuja (President), Zoe
Papazaglou, Jenn Pastrich, Zack
Ross, Zach Schiff, Mami Sorin,
Reena Vanjani, and Jen Vevante.
