NOVEMBER 15-21, 2002
VOL. 40 NO. 45 SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE FORTY CENTS
The 2002-2003 Golden Girls Varsity Kickline entertains th,
Homecoming crowd during halftime.
"Go Eagles!" was the charge on
October 26 for Bethpage High
School's Homecoming 2002. The
rain and wind postponed the
parade, but the weather cleared in
time for the Bethpage Golden
Eagles Football team to chalk up
another dominating victory, this one
over rival Plainedge by a score of 48-
7. The victory enabled the Eagles to
maintain sole possession of first
place in Conference III.
The Eagles scored early and
often, enroute to a 35-0 halftime
lead. Running back Jordan Levine
started things off with a 20-yard
touchdown run in the first quarter.
The Eagles scored minutes later on
a blocked field goal attempt by
Plainedge. Bethpage's Steven Ifasi
blocked the kick and returned it 93
yards for another Bethpage
touchdown and a 14-0 lead
following Trevor Michaelsen's extra
point kick. Jordan added another
touchdown run later in the game and
quarterback Erik Jansen, and
running backs Rich Festante and
Tom Mignone each added
touchdown runs. Receiver Dan
Karpinski also caught a touchdown
pass thrown by running back
Michael Arena on an option plav. As
usual, the defense stifled its
opponent, allowing just one
touchdown, late in the fourth
quarter.
Prior to the start of the game,
Coach Vogts received a Golden
Eagle trophy and a framed picture of
the team, commemorating his 300th
win as a head coach which he
attained just two weeks earlier. Local
merchant Gary Bretton was also
honored for his contribution to
Bethpage football.
Saxophonist Scott Litroff
performed the Star Spangled
Banner and the Golden Eagle
Marching Band, fresh off a fabulous
performance at the Newsday
Marching Band Festival held at
Hofstra just two days earlier,
performed at halftime, along with the
Bethpage Colorguard and the
Nassau County champion Golden
Girls Varsity Kickline squad. The
Varsity Cheerleaders also did their
part to keep school spirit soaring as
they cheered the team and
entertained the community
members in attendance.
Quarterback Erik Jansen was this
year's Homecoming King, while
Golden Girls Varsity Kickline captain
Joanna Sieben was the Queen.
Director of Physical Education, Health & Athletics John
Franchi presents Golden Eagles Football Head Coach Howie
