Cradle of Aviation Opens Doors
Featurine New IMAX Theater
Will Bethpage Water Leave a
Good Taste in Our Mouth?
On May 20th the Cradle of Aviation opens its doors on a $100
million complex that not only features 70 historic aircraft but a two
story IMAX experience that is expected to premiere the breath taking
film Space Station that captures the construction and operational use
of the International Space Station orbiting some 220 miles over our
heads.
Forget the popcorn at Long
Island's newest theater. Even if they
sold it at the Cradle of Aviation
Museum you wouldn't have time to
eat it inside the region's only IMAX®
experience on Long Island. On May
20th the Cradle of Aviation opens its
doors on a $100 million complex that
not only features 70 historic aircraft
but a two story IMAX experience
that is expected to premiere the
breath taking film Space Station that
captures the construction and
operational use of the International
Space Station orbiting some 220
miles over our heads. Among those
who will be in the audience will be
Sol Goodman of Bethpage who
brings his skills and enthusiasm to
bear in restoring vintage historic
aircraft for museum display.
A the first-ever IMAX space film,
Space Station transports audiences
to the International Space Station to
experience life in space. Floating
alongside the first men and women
to inhabit the new station, audiences
will literally feel a part of the mission
taking place 220 miles above Earth.
Directed and filmed in space by the
astronauts, Space Station 3D is the
story of a unique partnership
between 16 nations building a
laboratory in outer space.
The IMAX® Theater experience
is based on technology that first
comes into play during the
production process when film 10
times the size of standard movie
images is loaded into a 52-pound
camera. Each IMAX film frame is
roughly the size of a business card.
IMAX film cartridges, which weigh
nearly five pounds when fully
loaded, shoot only five to seven
minutes of footage each. That means
the astronauts were kept particularly
busy while shooting from the unique
vantage point of space.
Projecting the film is a
technological feat in itself. The movie
is stored on reels the size of tractor
tires that must be loaded onto a
hand-built projector as big as a
Volkswagen Beetle. The loading
process is done beneath the theater,
inside a dust-free projection and
operator's room and visible through
windows as the audience prepares to
enter the Cradle. At the start of the
show, tne entire two-ton projection
package is lifted on an elevator some
22 feet into the theater's seating
area.
The 15,000-watt xenon lamp
used to project the image onto the
screen is so bright that, if it were
placed on the moon, it could be seen
from Earth. The lamp's surface
reaches 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit,
requiring a cooling system to pump
five gallons of water and 800 cubic
feet of air around the bulb each
minute.
The Cradle of Aviation Museum
is located on Charles Lindbergh
Blvd., off of Exit M4 from the
Meadowbrook Parkway and adjacent
to Nassau Community College. It
opens to the public on May 20th with
IMAX® shows each hour from 10:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Will the Bethpage Water District
earn the coveted title of Best Tasting
Tap Water in Nassau County? You'll
find out when the 14th Annual Best
Tasting Tap Water Contest gets
underway at the Broadway Mall in
Hicksville. The popular event is
sponsored each year by the Long
Island Water Conference in honor of
National Drinking Water Week.
The tap water taste competition
runs at the mall from Sunday, May 5
through Thursday, May 9 between
10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shoppers will
be invited to participate in a blind
taste test to determine which Nassau
County tap water is the most
delicious.
Additionally, an informational
display will teach visitors about
where their drinking water comes
from and how it is tested frequently
for quality assurance..Valuable tips
for conserving water both in the
home and outdoors will also be
available. And, water experts will be
on hand throughout the event to
answer consumers' questions and
concerns.
Always the first full week of May,
National Drinking Water Week was
started to raise awareness of the
quality and quantity of local tap
water supplies.
"Unfortunately, the public is
often misinformed when it comes to
their drinking water. Most people
don't give a second thought as to
where it comes from or how
fortunate they are to have a
continuous flowing supply 24/7,"
stated LIWC Chairman Robert
Swartz, PE. "Long Islanders have
tap water that is among the best in
the nation. The area's public water
suppliers work hard to consistently
provide their customers with a safe
product. Come down to the mall,
participate in our taste contest and
learn more about one of life's most
precious natural resources."
The Bethpage Water District is a
member of the Long Island Water
Conference, a professional
organization of Nassau-Suffolk's
public water suppliers. Celebrating
51 years, the LIWC is dedicated to
providing and maintaining a safe
and plentiful public water supply on
Long Island. Members include
Nassau-Suffolk's 47 public water
suppliers, in addition to consulting
engineers, attorneys, water
contractors and officials from
government regulatory agencies.
