St Patrick's Day Parade held on March 3, proves
to be the biggest and best ever.
Attracts record crowds and participation.
Neither rain, nor sleet, nor wild
winds kept the St. Patrick's Parade
from its appointed route through
downtown Bethpage. The luck of the
Irish was with us again as the fierce
winds and heavy rains of Saturday
night subsided in time for the 1.1th
Annual Bethpage St. Patrick's
Parade.
At the Mass before the parade,
Fr. Siconolfi, Pastor of St. Martin of
Tours Church, paid tribute to all the
members of the uniformed services,
the heroes of the World Trade
Center disaster. Father asked all the
men and women in uniform to join
him on the altar to honor their
comrades whose lives were lost as
they attempted to rescue people
caught in the Twin Towers and to
honor the bravery of all those
involved in the ongoing rescue and
recovery efforts.
This year's parade had
something for everyone...the
Bethpage High School Band playing
Irish tunes to entertain the hundreds
of people lining the sidewalks and
Bill McCabe, the 2002 Grand
Marshal, riding in an open car behind
the band. Pipe bands created a
cadence for the marchers and filled
Stewart Avenue and Broadway with
hauntingly beautiful martial music.
Modern fire fighting apparatus
and antique autos, men and women
in Civil War garb and Teddy
Roosevelt in his morning suit...
Irishmen and women from the AOH
and Mid-Island Irish American clubs
and employees from Cablevision,
one of the parade's sponsors,
appropriately dressed in green
windbreakers...Boy Scouts and Girl
Scouts...students from LaSalle and
golfers from the Inisfada Golf Club...
the Bethpage Water District and the
Bethpage Historical Society...not to
mention the Cycling Murrays who
danced a reel while balancing
themselves on their unicycles...it was
one of the best St. Patrick's Parades
yet.
Last, but by no means least, the
K-9 Brigade...an assortment of
Continued in centerfold
thoroughbred dogs and mix breeds
outfitted in green leis and other Irish
symbols...the impressive
Greyhounds rescued from a career
chasing make-believe rabbits around
a racetrack...and finally, two horses
from the Long Island Horsemen's
Association.
The crowds dispersed to
celebrations at the Bethpage
Firehouse and LaSalle...B.K.
Sweeney's and WhoVille. The
festivities continued with more
.music, step dancing, food, drink and
Legislator Salvatore B. Pontillo (14th L.D.) was proud to once again/
march in Bethpage's 11th annual St. Patrick's Parade held on March
3rd. This year's Grand Marshal was Bill McCabe (retired FDNY).

Pontillo, James Stefanich, District Court Judge John Marks, Martha
Offerman and Marc Herbst.

Even Teddy Roosevelt stopped by.
