It is now the eleventh hour. This pause is to remind us that
the hour oj eleven has a tender significance to all of us.
It was on the eleventh day oj the eleventh month at
the eleventh hour that the guns ceased firing and
silence encompassed the earth. It was as of eleven

r - HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY -
In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. After four years
of bitter war, an armistice was signed, the "war to end all wars" was over.
November 11 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United States, to remember the sacrifices that men and women made
during the war in order to ensure a lasting peace. On Armistice Day, soidiers who survived the war marched in a parade
through their home towns. Politicians and veterans officers gave speeches and held ceremonies of thanks ,cr the peace
they had won.
Congress voted Armistice Day a legal holiday in 1938, twenty years after the war ended. But Americans realized that the
previous war would no be the last one. World War II began the following year, and nations great and small again participated
in bloody struggle. After the Second World War, Armistice Day continued to be observed on November 11
In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas call the holiday Veterans' Day in gratitude to the veterans in their town. Soon after.
Congress passes a bill introduced by a Kansas congressman renaming the national holiday to Veterans' Day.
Americans still give thanks for peace on Veterans' Day. There are ceremonies and speeches, ana at 11:00 in the morning,
most Americans observe a moment of silence, remembering those who fought for peace.
Armistice Day" was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II has required
the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen in the Nation's history; after American forces has fought
aggression in Korea, the 83rd congress, at the urging of the veterans' service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by
striking the work "Armistice" and inserting in lieu thereof the word "Veterans" With the approval of this legislation (Public
Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
