VOL. 39 NO. 45 SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE FORTY CENTS
A Somber But Patriotic Homecoming
Bethpage High School celebrated
Homecoming 2001 on
Saturday, October 6, and although
there were several cheers heard as
students and school officials
marched down Stewart Avenue, and
later again as the football Golden
Eagles romped to a decisive victory
over Division High School, tears
were shed during halftime as the
community honored two fallen, but
not forgotten heroes.
Brian Hickey, a Bethpage
firefighter and member of the Class
of 1972 and Peter Siracuse, a
former star on the Eagles football
team and member of the Class of
1990, both lost their lives in the
World Trade Center attacks of
September 11. Both were honored
at halftime, as the Bethpage Fire
Department gave an official salute
to their fellow firefighter Brian and
the football team retired Peter's
number 8 jersey. Family and friends
were on hand for the dedication.
The theme of patriotism in this
time of conflict was in the air
throughout the day. Prior to the
football game, a parade was held in
town, where several of the floats
were draped in Stars and Stripes.
The football game brought this day
to a somewhat happier ending, as
the Golden Eagles defeated Division
35-6. Bethpage Captain Vinnie
Valente led the way with touchdowns,
one on a 20-yard run and
another on a 9-yard pass from
Quarterback Matt Gabbola.
Friends and family of former Golden Eagles star Peter Siracuse

Central Boulevard School:
Wearing Their Hearts on Their Sleeves
The families, staff and faculty of Central Boulevard Elementary School
decided to join their hearts across America to raise funds for the Red Cross
Disaster Relief Fund. Families and faculty members were able to purchase
hearts for either $5 or $10 dollars Many families and staff were extiemely
generous and purchase multiple hearts. Each contributor's family name was
written on the hearts which were either red, white or blue and then they were
proudly displayed on the walls of the C.B.S. front lobby.
The response to this fundraising effort was unbelievable as C.B.s collected
$3,650 Which was matched by a m; ' corporation, giving the
fundraiser a total Ol $7, 300 I he money rdtttou was then donated to the R».o
Cross Disaster Relief Fund
The Central Boulevard community banded together to try and make a
difference in the lives ol those families who were tragically effected by the
events that occurred on September 1 1 and they certainly nave It is efforts
suctr as this thai prove that Americans have a pride and a spirit that is Stron
yer than ever and it also pioves that we all can make a difference if we wear
our hearts on our sleeves sometimes
