BETHPAGE STANDS PROUDLY TOGETHER On Sunday, September
23, the community of -
Bethpage came out in one
of the strongest showings
of support that our
community has ever seen.
Thousands of residents
filled the street on
Broadway, all holding their
candles as a show of unity
and hope in light of the
terrible tragedy, which
occurred at the hands of
terrorists on September 11.
This event, "A Gathering
of Unity" was sponsored by
the Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce and included
many representatives from
various religious institutions
in our community. The
event began with members
of the Vietnam Veterans of
America providing the
colors. There is no way that
1 could ever begin to
describe the feeling of pride
in seeing the American Flag
cut through the huge crowd
as everyone held their hand
over their hearts and recited
the Pledge of Allegiance
together. It was then that
Chamber President Gary
Bretton introduced his
brother Arthur Bretton who
powerfully and
meaningfully sang the
National Anthem in a way
that no one will ever forget.
He truly sang our anthem
from his soul, as too did the
huge crowd We were
inspired by the word of
comfort, healing and
strength from Rabbi Gordon
of the Bethpage Jewish
Center, Pastor Mario
Ancira, from St. Paul's
Church; Father Tom
Schmidt of St. Martin of
Tours and Rev. Sal
Bennardo of Assembly of
God Church. Their words of
hope, insight and spiritual
guidance were an enormous
comfort to each of us who
are desperately trying to
come to grips, with an
event, which has shaken us
all, yet has proved to unite
our Nation. Paul Masi of the
Vietnam Veterans of
America also took time out
to address the crowd and
provide us with information
and a sense of strength for
what lies ahead. Residents
were given "roses of
remembrance" from
Bethpage Bouquet as well
as beautiful "Pledge of
Allegiance1' cards from the
Arthur White Funeral
Home.
And then.. .our candles
were lit and the brilliant
light of every resident
holding their candles to the
sky as they sang Cod Bless
America is something that
none of us will ever forget.
The Chamber unveiled, at
that time, Bethpage's
permanent "Candle of
Remembrance \ This
gorgeous candle which was
constructed by Lenny
Mulqueen, who has always
been their for his
