MARY QUINN RETIRES
After Over 50 Years of Service to the Children of Bethpage, Campagne's Principal Retires
position as Principal at the Great
Neck Road Elementary School in the
Copiague School District. Like her
sister Mary, Catherine Quinn spent
her entire career with the same
district. The two plan to travel in
their spare time, as they always do.
Mary Quinn says she will likely
return to St. John's University to
complete her dissertation. Over the
summer, she completed class
organization and preparation for the
upcoming school year.
"I always had the highest regard
for Miss Quinn's professionalism and
integrity and enjoyed working with
her," said PTA Council President
Kathy Beatty, who once served as
Co-PTA President at Campagne. "I
am glad my children had the
opportunity to attend Charles
Campagne while she was Principal.
She touched the lives of so many
people, I know she will be
remembered for a long time to
come."
Angelita Cintado, who has
served as the Assistant Principal at
JFK Middle School in Bethpage
during the 2000-2001 school year,
has been appointed as the new
Principal at Campagne.

Professionalism, caring, stability,
longevity, and grace are just a few of
the words that can be used to
describe Mary Quinn, the only
Principal Charles Campagne
Elementary School has ever known.
Earlier this month, Miss Quinn
announced her retirement after 51
years of service - all in the Bethpage
School District.
"Miss Quinn's dedicated service
to the (hildren and parents of this
community is unparalleled," said
Bethpage Superintendent of Schools
Harvey Hilburgh. "She has worked in
•everal of our schools, and her
mpad has been felt by multiple
generations. She will be greatly
missed."
In 1949, Miss Quinn was hired by
[hen Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Victor Miller to teach the third grade
at the Powell Avenue School, which
was located on the site of the
Bethpage Public Library. She also
taught the fifth grade at Pine Avenue
Elementary School and was later
appointed to serve as the school's
Assistant Principal upon
recommendation by Pine Avenue
Principal Dr Anna Rockhill.
"I always wanted to be a
teacher," said Miss Quinn. "Dr
Rockhill saw something in me that
told her I could impact the lives of
many more children [as a school
administrator]."
Miss Quinn later served as
Principal at Powell Avenue School
and the Broadway Elementary
School (which was located in JFK
Middle School). Finally, when
Charles Campagne Elementary
School opened in 1959, Miss Quinn
found a permanent home, as she was
appointed to serve as the school's
first Principal.
"The key in the Principal's office
is a symbol that opens the door to
many opportunities to the children of
Bethpage," added Miss Quinn. "I was
ecstatic to open the doors of this
school for the first time. Every dav
since then has been a delight ana a
joy. ..right up to the very last day of
school this year. I thank all of the
faculty, the teachers, the
administrators - who are the
teachers of teachers,' all of the
support staff, the parents, PTAs and
other school organizations that I
have had the pleasure of working
with, and of course the children, for
making this a memorable career."
Miss Quinn will not be alone this
September when the doors of

The Bethpage Board of
Education has appointed Angelita
Cintado to serve as the new
Principal at Charles Campagne
Elementary School in Bethpage. Mrs.
Cintado fills the position vacated by
Principal Mary Quinn, who retired
earlier this month after a long
prestigious career.
For the past year, Mrs. Cintado
has served as the Assistant Principal
at JFK Middle School in Bethpage
She has extensive experience, both
as a teacher and building
administrator, having spent much of
her time working in the New York

School Community." said Mrs

staff, directors and administrators on
maximizing the elementary
curriculum to achieve the highest
level of student success possible."
Some of her goals for her first
year at Campagne are to: acquaint
herself with the staff, students, and
parents; concentrate heavily on the
"3 R's" - reading, writing and
arithmetic; integrate a greater focus
on character education; and
strengthen communication between
the three elementary schools in the
district and the two schools at the
secondary level.
The opportunity to observe
students entering the middle school
foi the first time at JFK has been a
benefit, according to Mrs Cintado.
She believes the experience has
provided her with a greater insight
into what areas should be focused on
at the elementary level to prepare
children to be lifelong learners "The
elementary level of a child's
education is extremely important as
it sets the foundation for future." site
added.
Mrs Cintado also believes that
her prior experience as both an
elementary teacher and
administrator will enable her to
assist teachers in classroom
organization, provide ideas So;
lessons, and facilitate and conducl
effective staff development
practices At JKK she was influential
in initiating a comprehensive buliv
prevention prooram and was an
active co author of the school safety
plan
