Historic Base Ball Festival At JFK Math OlvmpiaUS
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
If you want to experience
baseball the way it was meant to be
played - on real grass for the love of
the game plan to visit the Historic
Base Ball Festival at Old Bethpage
Village Restoration on August 4th
and 5th, announced Nassau County
Executive Thomas S. Gulotta.
Vintage "base ball" (it was two words
back then) teams from Ohio, New
Jersey and New England will join the
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Old Time Base Ball clubs in a
weekend celebration of the history of
base ball. These two days of friendly
competition will feature teams with
such colorful names as the Bellmore
Seminoles, Providence Grays and
Elizabeth Resolutes. The teams will
play our nation's favorite game by
the original rules of 1860 through
1899.
The game of baseball has a rich
history in America. It evolved in the
second part of the 19th century. The
yearly changes in the rules,
uniforms, and on-field appearance of
base ball demonstrate the
importance of the game to 19th
century Americans. Cricket, an
English children's game called
rounders, and an adult version of the
same game were all early influences
on the game of base ball. At Old
Bethpage Village's Historic Base
Ball Festival, parents and children
will be invited to join in games of
rounders between scheduled base
ball matches.
Old Time Base Ball is played by
the rules in vogue on Long Island in
the late 19th century. Nine teams,
based on actual 19th century Long
Island base ball clubs, compete in
two competitive leagues. A unique
baseball experience is provided by
volunteers who wear period uniforms
and use authentic recreations of
original equipment in the setting of
this 19th century restored village.
In addition to the games, Brass
Band Concerts on both Saturday
and Sunday afternoons will complete
the days' festivities. Food service
and picnic areas are provided.
Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for
resident senior citizens, children
ages 5-12, persons with disabilities,
volunteer firefighters, volunteer
ambulance corps members, auxiliary
police and veterans. Parking is free

Four seventh graders from JFK
Middle School participated in the
final round of the Long Island Math
Fair at Hofstra University. Claudia
Markarian won the Gold Medal for
her knowledge of Conic Sections.
Lauren Walsh won the Silver Medal
for her work on Kepler's Laws on
Planetary Motion. Kristina Walsh
and Karan Sabharwal won Bronze
Medals for their presentations on
Magic Squares and the Pythagorean
Theorem, respectively.
Congratulations on a job well done!

July M) was a sad day for the Tribune and the community of Bethpage i
as we lost a talented and dear friend, £:
Ernest Warnken, who contributed so much to this £:
newspaper as a featured columnist. •;:•
Ernie was so dedicated to this community and not a week went by g
that he didn't stop in to deliver his newest submission for the paper. £
His commitment to this town, his dedication to his county and j:-:
his love of family will never be forgotten nor will his words of wisdom. |
We walk this earth but only a short time. And it is during that time ;j::
that we can and should make our mark and make a differnce in the world. ji;i
Ernest Warnken did just that. He made that difference
and he will never be forgotten.
We extend heartfelt sympathy to the Warnken family.
Please lake comfort in knowing how much he was loved and
how many lives he has touched. He was a true treasure to this community |
and personally to this newspaper :$
Somehow I!) my heart 1 know that he and his beloved wile Pal are g:
