A Little Rain Never Hurt Anybody
BETHPAGE CHAMBER FESTIVAL
HUGE SUCCESS DESPITE WEATHER
Friday, August 10 started out
as an unbearably hot and humid
day. Chamber of Commerce
members took to the train station
parking lot and endured the
oppressive heat to set up their
booths for the Annual Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce Summer
Festival. By 3pm the skies began to
turn dark and weather forecasters
began warning of severe
thunderstorms. And boy, were they
accurate! The rains came and
Chamber members waited, taking
refuse in their tents and cars as the
drops came down in buckets and
the lighting and thunder followed
in suit. This uncooperative weather
continued until about 7:30pm until
finally the rain stopped. It was then
that the lights went on, the rides
were opened and vendor booths
began to set up for Bethpage's
much-anticipated event of the
year.. the Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce Summer Festival.
Although Mother Nature dealt
us all a lousy batch of weather,
Bethpage residents braved the
storm and came out in force on
Friday evening proving that when
it comes to fun, getting wet just
doesn't bother too many.
This Bethpage tradition got off
to a slow start but by 8:00 pm lines
were beginning to form at the
ticket booth. Residents were
treated to the sounds of the South
Shore Brass, a 10- piece band
that performed wonder fully and the
mouth -watering smell of sausage
and peppers filled the air. By 10pm
the skies were pretty dry and the
sounds of EXIT, an unbelievable
talented group had the crowd
dancing and singing to their
talented tunes.
This festival regardless of the
weather is quite an undertaking to
get off the ground and requires
many hours of preparation and

work at the event itself. The
Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
is extremely grateful for the
generosity of their corporate
sponsors who year after year help
to defray the growing costs of this
two -day festival, If not for their
help this event would not be
profitable or possible. The
Chamber salutes their 2001
sponsors: Cablevision, New
Island Hospital, North Fork
Bank, Briarcliffe College,
Northrop Grumman, Bank of
New York, King Kullen
Supermarkets, EAB and the
Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
Saturday brought with it more
ram and things were not looking
too promising until about 6:30pm
when the rain stopped again and
boy oh boy the crowd (lew in.
Record numbers of resident filled
the festival grounds on Saturday
and made this one of the most
successful festivals that the
Chamber has ever hosted. By
9:00pm you could hardly move
through the crowd and the sounds
of laughter filled the air. Saturday
we all were treated to the sounds of
Music Unlimited who kept the
crowd going until midnight and
then some. We also had a standing
room only crowd for a heart
stopping performance by Norma's
School of Dance who year after
year provide wonder ill 1
entertainment for the Chamber
with the talented dancing of SO
many of our own Bethpage
children SO-50 rallies were
building, cans were being collected
bv the SPEC group who were
conducting a Cans tor Cancer
Collection drive and smiles could
photos by Charlie Razenson
be seen everywhere as Bethpage
residents came out in record
numbers and in full force to enjoy
a tradition that they truly love.
We all kept our fingers crossed
and the weather held out for the
most fabulous fireworks display
that Bethpage had ever been
treated to. The twenty minute plus
fireworks extravagan/a by the
BAY FIREWORKS Company
was nothing short of spectacular
The skies m Bethpage truly came
alive and after their five star
performance cheers and applause
could be heard everywhere. This
year residents were also treated to
some new rides and games, which
were provided by Newton & Sons
Midway Company. Newton has
provided the Chamber with rides
and games lor the past 10 years
