MEMORIAL DAY PARADE 2001:
A TRIBUTE TO VETERANS
The Rev. Michael J. Hartigan Council No. 5033 Knights
of Columbus were out in full force to pay tribute to those
who sacrificed for their country.
Dorothy Rabas, Mary Jane Dudley, Marie Rusch all
joined Joan Poppe as they marched through town. All are
members of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and as
everyone knows Joan is the Tribune featured "PATRIOT."
Memorial Day is certainly a special
day as we all take time out to
remember those who gave so much
and sacrificed for our country. It is a
day to reflect about the many
privileges, which are afforded to us
due to the bravery and tireless efforts
of men and woman who fought hard
for their beliefs and what this country
stands for. Freedom did not come
without a price. Many Veterans did not
return. Others returned not whole, in
either body or soul. These sacrifices
must never be forgotten. For it is the
blood; sweat and tears of our Veterans
that have formed the building blocks
for which this country is founded.
Bethpage 's Annual Memorial Day
Parade 2001 was perhaps the largest
Bethpage has ever seen and it is one
that truly paid tribute and honor to our
Veterans. Almost every local
organization, senior group, scouting
group, sports club. Veterans Club,
Police Department, Fire Department
and school group were represented. To
say that is was impressive is an
understatement. And even though the
skies duln 7 always appear to be
friendly, spectators young and old
lined the streets waving their /lags,
snapping pictures and wearing smiles.
You could certainly see the pride in
everyone S face as Bethpage s parade
passed by.
So many thanks must be fcivei! to
SEE CENTERFOLD AND BACK
the Bethpage Memorial Day Parade
Committee who tirelessly put this
parade together. Mind you, it is by no
means an easy task. Each year these
dedicated and hardworking committee
members manage to put together a
parade more spectacular than the year
before.
The parade culminated with a
beautiful ceremony at the Bethpage
Community Park where wreaths were
placed and Bethpage's Veterans who
gave the ultimate sacrifice...their
lives... were remembered. Legislator
Ed Mangano gave the keynote address
and with some help from Joan Poppe
explained to the enormous crowd the
steps and meaning involved infolding
our American Flag. The Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce provided drink
and cookies to the parade participants
and dear old Mother Nature held out
long enough to keep the skies dry for
the entire ceremony.
The Bethpage Memorial Day
Parade Committee and all those who
participated in this year s glorious
parade should truly be proud.
Bethpage is a town that knows how
special and how important a role all
our Veterans have played not only in
the history of our country hut also in
each of our lives. Bethpage will twver
forget and that should make all of US
just a little extra proud'
