Bethpage Scout Thanked District Investigates
By Hempstead Mayor
Matthew Wing (center) was recently thanked by Mayor James
Garner of the Village of Hempstead for his efforts in collecting over one
hundred winter coats. Matthew organized the coat drive as his Life
Scout project. He was able to get scouts from Boy Scout Troop 604
(Bethpage, New York) to volunteer their time and efforts in conducting
a winter coat drive. The winter coats and jackets were collected and
brought to the Village of Hempstead where they supplemented the
Village's own Coat Drive. All jackets were distributed to those in need.

Student's Website
The Bethpage School District is
currently investigating the events
that led to a 13-year old JFK Middle
School eighth grader publishing a
website containing a list of 36
students who he claimed he was
going to "attack when it gets
warmer." The child has been
suspended, pending the completion
of the school district investigation, a
Nassau County Police Department
investigation, and subsequent
disciplinary hearing procedures with
which the district must comply.
"The Bethpage Board of
Education and the Bethpage School
District Administration consider the
safety of all of its students to be
paramount and we are proceeding in
accordance with required due
process procedures," said
Superintendent of Schools Harvey
Hilburgh. "We regret that this
incident has occurred and are doing
everything we can to ensure the
safety of our students and address
this situation in an appropriate
manner."
Upon learning of the incident,
JFK Middle School Principal Bruce
Jaeger immediately contacted the
child's parents and the parents of
children who were mentioned on the
site. Parents of children mentioned
on the site were invited to meet with
school and district officials on the
morning of Monday, February 12, to
discuss the incident and the steps
being taken. The school has made
counseling services available to
students and their parents.
Nassau County Police have
informed the district that after
interviewing the child extensively
and searching his home, they have
found no weapons or any evidence
of intent that would corroborate the
online threats. The website has since
been removed.
