Golden Eagles Sweet Victory
The Bethpage High School
Golden Eagles football team
captured the Nassau County
Conference III Championship with a
thrilling 16-15 victory over the Big
Red of Glen Cove at Hofstra
Stadium last Thursday evening. The
victory was special, as Bethpage
Head Coach Howie Vogts became
the all-time winningest coach in New
York State high school football
history with 288 wins.
When the final whistle rang
coaches and players from both
sidelines came over to congratulate
Coach Vogts (288-105-10 lifetime)
who has coached Bethpage for 47
years and launched the school's
football program back in 1952. When
Coach Vogts walked onto the field to
congratulate his players, the
Bethpage cheerleaders, and many-fans
in the stands, chanted "Howie!
Howie!"
Bethpage players gathered
around Coach Vogts in the middle of
the field and continued to cheer him
on. This game was emotional in more
than one way. In addition to it being
a record-breaking victory, it was an
intense game filled with high drama.
The Golden Eagles (Ranked No.
1) fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter
on an 80-yard drive that culminated
with Glen Cove's Jeff Rudloff
scoring on a 12-yard run. In the
second quarter, Bethpage pinned
Glen Cove (No. 2) deep in their end
zone, and came away with a safety
on a tackle of Big Red Quarterback
Victor Hidalgo by Vinnie Valente to
cut the deficit to 7-2. Later in the half,
Bethpage Quarterback Matt
Rewkowski led a 54-yard drive
capped off by a 10-yard touchdown
pass to Chris DeSimeone to put
Bethpage up 8-7, a lead they would
take into halftime.
Bethpage came out strong on
the opening drive of the second half.
Steve Bofill capped off a 52-yard
drive with a 33-yard touchdown run
to put Bethpage up 14-7. Rewkowski
added a two-point conversion on a
run, and Bethpage led 16-7. The
game quickly evolved into a contest
of field position, until Glen Cove's
Ivan Barrahone cut the Bethpage
lead to a16-13 on a rushing
touchdown late in the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles defense played
strong down the stretch, but Glen
Cove .put one more scare into the
Bethpage squad. With under a
minute to go, Rewkowski, playing on
defense, intercepted Hidalgo. On the
ensuing possession, with Bethpage
pinned deep in their own end zone,
Rewkowski was called for a safety as
he attempted to get rid of the ball.
Thjs made the score 16-15 and
forced Bethpage to kick the ball to
Glen Cove for one more possession.
However, the Bethpage defense held
the lead, and players, coaches and
fans celebrated.
Bethpage will now take on
Amityville in the Long Island
Conference III Championship to be
held this Friday at Hofstra Stadium,
beginning at 1:30 p.m.
