Flowers of Hope Bloom In The Cancer Awareness Garden
memory of a loved one who has passed away from cancer, or in celebration
of life for a cancer survivor. For weeks prior to May 24th, SPEC members got
together on their own time and worked countless hours getting the garden
ready for planting.
At the opening ceremony, everyone got down on his or her hands
and knees to plant the flowers, including Dr. Antoinette MacLeod, BHS
principal! Also at the opening, helping to plant flowers, were some of the
children from The Children's Cancer Center at North Shore University

Bethpage High School's Senior Courtyard, as SPEC (Students Putting an
End to Cancer), opened its Cancer Awareness Garden on Wednesday, May
24th. Over 700 flowers were planted in celebration of life and in memory of
cancer victims. Present at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was News 12
Long Island, who covered the story, and a representative from Nassau
County Executive Tom Gulotta's office, who presented SPEC with a special
citation from Mr. Golotta. Refreshments and balloons were provided by
students from Bethpage High School's Career Achievement Program (CAP),
who also worked diligently with SPEC to bring this garden to fruition. Brad
Jerson, President and founder of SPEC, said, "This garden is a dream come
true and it brings us closer to our goal of helping to fight cancer, benefiting
the community, and making a difference." Brad initiated the idea of an
awareness garden, where, for a $5.00 donation, a flower could be planted in
