Girls Gymnastics Team Does It Again!!
By Kim Rhatigan-Drexler,
Coach Bethpage-Plainview
Gymnastics Team
The Bethpage-Plainview Girls
Gymnastics Team successfully
defended its championship and
became the Nassau County
Champions this year! The gymnasts
were undefeated throughout the
season with 10 wins and no losses.
The team had many
accomplishments through the
season. Led by 7 seniors - Co-
Captains Rachel Schneiderman &
Melissa Saglimbene, Kim Castelli,
Adaya Lachman, Sandy Roberts,
Melanie Sferra, and Amy
Steinhauser, they took the season
one step at a time, meet by meet.
Their toughest competition came
from Sewanhaka and -Massapeqtia: s
At the Nassau County Team
Championship, they were losing to
Massapequa going into the final
rotation. Senior Adaya Lachman
started off the floor rotation with her
highest score of her career with an
8.675. Her teammates continued the
rally and captured the
championships. Adaya also took 1st
place out of 60 gymnasts at the
Nassau Coaches Invitational on floor
exercise. The score of 167.0 is the
highest score to date -for our team
and missed the Nassau County
record by 0.3. Every time they made
a goal for the team, they would
surpass it and go for the next level.
These 7 seniors were the glue of this
championship team. This special
group of gymnasts worked with the
underclassmen, teaching them new
skills as well as the meaning of
sportsmanship.
Senior Melanie Sferra has made
great accomplishments throughout
her 4 years on the team and learned
many skills. Amy Steinhauser
learned new skills and will be missed
next year. Kim Castelli led the team
in enthusiasm and sportsmanship
and will be remembered by her
teammates by her creative cheers.
Kim has been a valuable member of
the team for 4 years and will be
missed greatly. Sandy Roberts has
had tremendous success due to her
driving energy and hard work ethic.
She learned many skills and was
always eager to learn more. Her
perseverance and dedication were
outstanding and she is a role model
to her teammates.
Newcomer 8th grader Doreen
Baram (Plainview) had a very
successful season, as she took 2nd
in the All Around in Nassau County
and 1st place on the uneven bars.
Doreen went on the New York State
Championships to capture 5th place
on the balance beam! Doreen was
the top scorer in the All Around in
her first season with the team.
Joining Doreen at the State
Championships were 8th grader
Taylor Rut and 10th grader Victoria
Reese. Taylor took 3rd place on floor
exercise and Victoria took 6th place
on the Uneven Bars at the Nassau
Championships. Taylor was one of
the highest scorers on floor exercise
and beam all season. Taylor was
instrumental in the teams'
successes. Victoria was one of the
top scorers for the uneven bars in
her third season on the team.
Rachel Schneiderman won the
Marilyn Schnaars Award for the
highest.scoring senior in Nassau
County. Rachel holds the distinction
of being the first 6-year member of
the team. Rachel has had a very
successful career on the gymnastics
team, being one of the most
consistent highest scorers in all 6
years. Her leadership and
sportsmanship will be remembered
by her teammates, as she was a role
model to the younger gymnasts.
Junior Sarah Lowenthal (Co-
Captain) was All County and
provided tremendous depth to the
team with her talent. Sarah was one
of the leading scorers on floor and
beam for the team. All County
