Bethpage High Tech Incubator at Briarcliffe
Takes Bethpage and Long Island Into 21st Century
Just five years ago the fate of
Bethpage was certainly up in the
air. The dramatic downsizing of
Grumman Aerospace, now
Northrop Grumman, was a
devastating blow to the
community of Bethpage, who for
years relied on the defense
industry? to help add to the
Bethpage tax base as well as
employ well over 20,000 people.
Buildings were quickly being
deserted and huge industrial
production facilities were left
barren. Jobs were lost and the
property was deteriorating
rapidly. Residents were anxious
as well as concerned about how
this would affect their
community, property values as
well as their environment.
Well, today, the area that
once was home to the defense
industry is now the proud home
of Cablevision, Robert Plan, Lilly
Popcorn, Goya, Gaines Berland
and Briarcliffe College to name a
few. The area is thriving and
Bethpage's tax base is stable and
growing. Employment
opportunities are growing
steadily and the area is well
groomed and manicured.
On May 17, Briarcliffe
College was visited by Governor
George Pataki who officially
opened the LISTnet High Tech
Incubator located at the College
in Bethpage. Briarcliffe and the
High Tech Incubator are a prime
example of how far Bethpage has
come since the collapse of the
defense industry. Bethpage has
truly replaced defense
production with high tech
software~development production
and innovation.
The 23,000 square foot high-tech
research and development
facility has already reached full
capacity with 16 firms and 50
Nassau County Legislator Edward P. Mangano along with Governor George E. Pataki helped to open the LISTnet
High Tech Incubator at Briarcliffe College. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on the grounds of Briarcliffe College in
Bethpage. In the photograph are (left to right) Legislator Edward P. Mangano, Richard Kruse, Stratem/Contectem; Dr.C.

workers. The incubator provides
tenants with space at below
market rates, access to shared
resources and linkages with Long
Island software, legal, financial,
and technology companies in
order to make advances in
industries such as entertainment,
wireless communications and
health service.
This wonderful venture was
the brainstorm of a group of
visionaries who led the Incubator
Steering Committee. Richard
Turan, former President of
Briarcliffe College; Edward P.
Mangano, Nassau County
Legislator, Len Sturm, KPMG
LLP and representatives from
SUNY Stony Brook and
Polytechnic Universities all
shared the dream, that this
Incubator type program offered
by Governor Pataki was exactly
what was needed in Bethpage.

Bethpage Says Yes To Budget;
Votes In Watson, Tichy
Long Island's Super Tuesday School Budget and Trustee vote
brought with it a record of districts across our Island voting no to
their proposed budgets...19 to be exact While those budgets were
defeated for a variety of reasons, although almost all having to do
with higher spending and recent bond issue proposals, Bethpage
residents passed a $41,959,480 budget by a vote of 1,185 to 981. The
average homeowner will pay about $3400 in their school tax portion
of their tax bill. Although the turnout for voting was on the high side
it still is quite disappointing that more residents do not come out to
cast their vote. Especially since these budgets directly affect each and
every homeowner.
Sandra Watson, the incumbent, was re-elected for a fifth term
and ran unopposed. She received 1074 votes and serves now as
President of the Board of Education. In a race that was run with
true dignity and consideration DonTichy defeated Kurt Spears by a
vote of 1130- 992. Congratulations to those who ere elected as well
as to aUfor volunteering so much time and caring deeply enough to
want to make a difference. This race was run in a polite and kind
manner and that is appreciated by the entire town.
