Postal Officials
Unveil New Stamp
Joining Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta is Thomas
Rosati, Long Island District Manager, United States Post Office.
Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta joined United States
Postal Service officials today at a ceremony unveiling the new Vietnam
Veterans Memorial stamp, the "Wall."
The stamp is part of the Postal Service's 1980's Celebrate the Century
series. The series includes 15 stamps representative of the Century, which
give a unique chronicle of American history, providing decade by decade
glimpses of the past. The stamps were selected by the public during
nationwide balloting in February 1999.
"It gives me great pleasure to be a part of this special ceremony," said
County Executive Gulotta. "The creation of this poignant stamp is a fitting
tribute to our soldiers who fought valiantly in the Vietnam War. This stamp
ensures that their sacrifices for our great nation will be recognized in a
tangible fashion. Tragically, our Vietnam Veterans were forced to fight two
wars - one in the jungles of Vietnam and a second war at home for the rights
and benefits to which they and their families were entitled."
The Vietnam memorial stamp depicts a veteran touching "The Wall" that
has inscribed on black granite the names of every fellow soldier lost in
America's longest war.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was designed by Maya Lin and
dedicated on November 13, 1982. The Memorial in Washington, D.C.
displays the names of the more than 58,000 Americans who died in the
Vietnam War or are listed as missing.
