Bethpage Rotary Honors Students
For Academic and Leadership Qualities
On Thursday, January 28th, the
Bethpage Rotary Club held it's biannual
Student of the Month Recognition
luncheon at H.R. Singleton's
in Bethpage. The Student of
the Month program recognizes area
students that have demonstrated
academic and/or vocational excellence
and leadership through involvement
in community or school
service. Students and their guidance
counselors from the five local
schools were in attendance. The
five area schools are Bethpage,
Plainview-Old Bethpage, Plainedge,
Island Trees, and Division Avenue.
The Bethpage recipient is Gina
Omage. Ms. Omage is a member
of the National Honor Society and
the Tri-M Music Society. She has
been the recipient of prestigious
awards such as the Hugh O'Brian
Youth Foundation Award, the Judith
Shapiro Parliamentary, the NY
State Governors Certificate of Merit
and the NYSA 1998 Outstanding
Student Award. Ms. Omage is a
musically gifted student and perform
with the school's Jazz Band
and Concert Band.
Athletically, Gina is captain of
the Varsity Soccer and Softball
teams. Ms. Omage will attend
Georgetown University in the fall.
The Island Trees recipient is
Christine Sampson. Academically,
Ms. Sampson ranks #1 in her class
of 141 students in a program of accelerated
and advanced placement
courses. Christine is District Project
Chairperson the Key Club, Secretary
for Key Club, as well as an editor
for the school's literary magazine
and newspaper. Christine is a vital
member of the Drama Club, Science
Olympiad, Class Council, Orchestra
and the Human Awareness
Club. Christine also participates in
Varsity Kickline and Varsity Badminton.
She is also the recipient of the
New York State School Music Association
medal for excellence and the
National Association of English
Teachers Writing Award.
The Plainview - Old Bethpage
recipient is Jacqueline Moessner.
Academically Jacqueline has a
three and one half-year grade point
average of 99.214. She is a member
of the National honor Society
(Vice President), Spanish Honor
Society, (President), Youth Ministry
and a Student Newspaper Columnist.
Jacqueline plans on continuing
her education at Princeton University
in the fall.
The Division Avenue recipient is
Kelliann Davis. Ms. Davis is a member
and Treasurer of the National
Honor society and will graduate in
the top fifteen percent of her class.
Kelliann is Captain of Competition
and Football Cheerleading, Vice
President of the Student council
and Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook.
Last year, Kelliann was elected presiding
Town Supervisor for
"Students in Government Day." This
years she was crowned Homecoming
Queen. Ms. Davis hopes to
major in secondary education.
The Plainedge recipient is Daniel
Menasha. Daniel is this year's
Class Valedictorian as well as a
member of the National Honor Society
and the Spanish Honor Society.
Some of Daniel's many extracurricular
activities include Marching
Band, concert band, an Internship
Program - Jr. Volunteer at NCNMC.,
Matheltes, Peer Tutoring, Varsity
Volleyball and Yearbook Club During
his years at Plainedge High
School, Daniel has received many
prestigious awards including the AP
Scholar Award, American Chemical
Society High School Research
Award, the Intel Science Talent
Award and is a National Merit
Commended Student achieving the
top five percentile of PSAT scores.

Earn Chef
Professionalism
Award
Besides being an outstanding
chef, Culinary Arts teacher John
Murphy of Bethpage is committed
to helping his students at BOCES
Nassau Tech advance in their education
and careers. His dedication
to promoting the importance of professionalism
among his students
and peers earned him the prestigious
"Chef Professionalism Award,"
from the Long Island Chapter of the
American Culinary Federation
(ACF).
"It was a great honor to receive
this award," says Murphy "Part of
DEDICATED PROFESSIONAL:
John Murphy loves being a teacher.
being a chef is to continuously pass
along knowledge, and that is what I
do for my students."
To be nominated for the award,
Murphy was required to exemplify
the highest standard of professionalism
through certification, continuing
education and training, participating
in culinary competition, developing
young culinary students
and joining in community activities.
