Cablevision to the Rescue
Pictured left-to-right: (bottom) Toni Sinacori, Cablevision; Bryant
Kaplan, Executive Director, People; Christine Bragan, Cablevision and
Joan Hendricks, Cablevision. Pictured on roof: Freeda Goldberg,
Cablevision.
On September 23rd, People
Counseling Agency, which is a not
for profit program working with
families and children in Bethpage,
was the recipient of kindness from
Cablevision of Long Island.
Cablevision donated staff, supplies
and materials, and most importantly
their time to paint the exterior of the
facility in which People operates.
Bryant Kaplan, the Executive
Director of People, reported that this
was a true act of kindness. Each
year we struggle to try to maintain
the level of services we provide to
the community and projects such as
these are just way out of reality. The
facility was in need of a paint job for
the past 10 years and we were
fortunate to be the recipients of
Cablevision's services. A special
thanks to Brent Baynon of Bay
Painting Inc. for his professional
technical assistance and guidance
as well as his expertise of getting to
those hard to reach places that no
one else could get to.
Change Your Clock,
Check Your Battery
Nearly one third of American
homes with smoke detectors enjoy
a false sense of security! Why?
Because the smoke detector
batteries are dead or missing. There
is serious concern that non working
smoke detectors are so common
that they are preventing our nation
from achieving the full potential of
increased fire safety.
To save lives and prevent
needless injuries in our community,
the Bethpage Volunteer Fire
Department has joined forces with
the International Association of Fire
Chiefs and Energizer Batteries for
the annual "CHANGE YOUR
CLOCK, CHANGE YOUR
BATTERY" campaign. Bethpage
Fire Chief Peter Bianco urges
everyone to adopt a simple, life
saving habit: when you change your
clock from daylight savings time
each Fall, change your smoke
detector batteries also. This year's
date is OCTOBER 31.
A residential fire occurs in the
United States every 66 seconds. A
working smoke detector cuts your
risk of dying in a house fire by over
50%. Most fatalities occur between
2 and 5 a.m. - when most people
are asleep. Don't bet your life
hoping that the odor of smoke will
wake you up. Smoke dulls the
senses and disorients people. A
smoke detector buys time for you
and your family to escape.
Smoke detector maintenance is
one of the simplest, most effective
ways to reduce home fire deaths
and injuries. On October 31, please
"CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHANGE
YOUR BATTERY."
It's Not Too Late
Donations are still coming in at a rapid pace for the Norma Farrar
Community Yard Sale which was held on October 3. The event was
held in Norma's memory and raised funds for Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratories. So far estimates for this first time venture are at the
$4000 point but we hope that some local businesses and corporations
will jump on board. It's NOT TOO LATE and we NEED YOUR HELP.
Pictured above is event organizer Bonnie Holzmacher and Nassau
County Legislator Edward P. Mangano who also helped in directing
Bonnie to the proper channels. Below Ed Mangano is pictured with Sal
and Noel Greco who helped as well as participated in this worthwhile
event. If you wish to donate PLEASE send your checks made out to "1
in 9" to 329 Broadway, Bethpage. Get involved in this worthwhile
cause.
