B.ED. Wets Down New Pumper
During the ceremony, Engine Company 5 members observe a moment
of silence for New York City Fire Captain Vincent Fowler. Captain
Fowler died fighting a Queens house fire just days before.
Firefighters don't ride the back step or U pumper to fires anymore,
but at "Wet Downs" they do. Completely soaked, Engine 5 members
uphold the firematic tradition.

After delivering the blessing, Bethpage Fire Chaplain Monsignor
Daniel A. Picciano sprinkles the rig with holy water. Monsignor is
pleased to provide the "First Wet Down".

bath as they jointly christen the pumper.
It was a grand day for a "Wet down" June 6th, when Bethpage's Engine
Company Five christened their new Seagrave pumper. The ceremony
was held at the Union Avenue firehouse.
After the formalities, and the traditional "Hose Down" from other fire
companies, the firefighters welcomed all their guests and neighbors to a
barbecue buffet.
