VOL. 33 NO. 29 July 23-July 29,1999 40 CENTS
YOUR OFFICIAL HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER
ONE SMALL STEP
ONE GIANT LEAP
The countdown was
heard around the
world. On July 16,
1969 three men
embarked on one of
the greatest missions of all time
and they had a piece of Bethpage
travelling along with them. The
three men were astronauts Armstrong,
Aldrin and Collins and the
mission was Apollo 11 when at
9:32 AM rockets roared and the
Columbia rocket began its journey
to the moon.
And why is it that Bethpage took
that historic journey to the moon
with Apollo 11? Well in case you
were not aware, the Grumman
Corporation, now Northrop Grumman
and many Bethpage
employees were responsible for
the building of the LEM, code
name Eagle.
On July 20th at approximately
4:18 EOT the Eagle touched down
and we heard those famous words
from Neil Armstrong The Eagle
has landed.' It was six hours after
that landing that two astronauts
suited up for the next part of their
adventure...tneir stroll on the
moon.
At 10:56 PM, over 600 million
people, nearly breathless and
totally glued to their television
screens, witnessed Armstrong's
left foot touch the surface of the
moon. Taking 'One small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind.'
Yes, NASA had done it. They
landed a man on the moon before
the end of the decade. Astronaut
Aldrin joined Armstrong shortly
after and together they walked the
surface of the moon, conducting
experiments and making history
with every step. The proudest
moment was when the two
planted a U.S. flag in the soil and
were congratulated by President
Richard Nixon with the longest
distance phone call ever made.
Thirty years later we salute
these three men and the United
States. We here in the town of
Bethpage can take pride, true
pride in knowing that the LEM
landed on the moon safely because
of our fine men and
women who helped insure one
giant leap which began with that
small step!
