The History Of Flag Day
I pledge allegiance to
the flag of t h e United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and
Justice for all.
History of Our Flag
The flag of the United States of America today has 13 stripes - 7 red and 6
white - and 50 white stars on a blue field - five rows of 6 and four rows of 5.
The stripes remind us of the 13 original colonies that gained us our liberty.
The stars represent the states that are bound together into one country.
The meaning of the pledge of allegiance.
When you pledge allegiance to your flag you promise loyalty and devotion
to your nation. Each word has a deep meaning.
I pledge allegiance....! promise to be true
to the flag.. ..to the sign of our country
of the United States of America....A country made up of 50 states, each with
certain rights.
and to the Republic....a. country where the people elect others to make laws
for them
for which is stands....the. flag means the country
one Nation under God....a single country whose people believe in a supreme
being
indivisible....the country cannot be split into parts
with liberty and justice....with freedom and fairness
for all....for each person in the country—you and me.
The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day
specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a
schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to
observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as Tlag
Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following
years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or
'Flag Day'.
Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag
Resolution of 1777 - was officially established'by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on
May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's
proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress
designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Third Qraders
Take First Place
In Kellogg's
Morning Scoop
Newspaper Contest
Congratulations to Ms. De-
Palma's Third Grade Class at Central
Boulevard School for winning
First Place in "Kellogg's Morning
Scoop Newspaper Contest." The
contest, co-sponsored by Scholastic
Inc., was open to all third, fourth
and fifth graders across the United
States. In order to enter, the class
had to create a four page newspaper
centering around the topic of
nutrition. For one month, room 112
was transformed into headquarters
for "The Nutrition Subscription."
Each student was assigned a job
within the three sections of the paper.
News, Sports, and Arts & Entertainment.
Students diligently and
enthusiastically took on roles as editors,
photographers, illustrators, designers,
comic strip authors, advertisers,
horoscope "psychics," advice
columnists and of course writers. In
class, time was spent reading and
analyzing parts of a newspaper and
discussing responsible journalism.
Students worked as teams, researching
articles and interviewing
subjects to be sure their pieces
were accurate. Once written and
edited, "The Nutrition Subscription"
was put together in the Mac Lab
with the help and guidance of the
computer teacher, Mrs. Nosowitz.
The finished product surpassed
every expectation; the creativity and
hard work of these third graders
shines in this newspaper. The class
has received a $500 gift certificate
for Scholastic products and will have
select articles published in a custom
edition of Scholastic News. Ms. De-
Palma, her class and their families
could not be more proud of their national
recognition and the spectacular
job done!
