PROPOSAL FOR
BICYCLE LANE
IN BETHPAGE
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
John Venditto announced that the
Town has applied for a $70,090.24
grant to create a bicycle lane in
Bethpage.
"The New York State Department
of Transportation is making
federal funding available through
the Transportation Equity Act for the
21st Century (TEA-21) for a variety
of projects, including those that en-|
courage the use of bicycles as a
form of transportation," Supervisor
Venditto stated. "The Town is proposing
to stripe bicycle lanes from a
point where Bethpage State Parkway
intersects with Plainview Road
to Powell Avenue just past the
western ramp exit of Route 135 in
Bethpage."
The Supervisor went on to say
that the project would also include a
system of "shared roadway" signs
from the end of the bicycle lanes
along Powell Avenue onto Benkert
Street to Stewart Avenue, terminating
at the Long Island Rail Road
Station. At the railroad station, bicycle
lockers would be installed as
pari of the project cost.
Supervisor Venditto noted that
the estimated cost of the project is
$87,612.80. The 80-20 matching
grant would be in the amount of
$70,090.24 with the Town's share
being $17,522.56.

May Is Poppy Month
A Time To Remember
May is the start of our spring and summer. It is our time for
fun & frolic. But remember it is also a time of honoring the men
and women of our armed forces who gave their lives for their
Country. By wearing the Poppy on Memorial Day it is our Nations
way of saying we will never forget them.
The American Legion Aux. Archie McCord Unit #86 of Bethpage
announces that the Poppy drive will take place during the
entire month of May.
The Poppy was adopted as the Memorial Flower at the first
convention of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1921.
Lest We Forget
As I hold each
Poppy in my hand
I see a face of U.S. Servicemen
Each Poppy represents
A Soldier, Sailor or Marine
lAlho gave their lives
for this great land
So wear the Poppy
during the Month of May
To show we mourn our miiiiary dead.
They died for their Country
So that we may live
So wear that Poppy
To remember them.
by Joan Poppe, Poppy Chairman
The Poppy was chosen because it represents the small
Poppies that blossomed on the battle fields of France after
World War One.
By wearing the Poppy, we show our respect and pay tribute
to those Veterans who gave their lives during all our wars.
The Poppies are hand-made by Veterans in Auxiliary-sponsored
Workshops. The Craft supplements physical therapy
needed by the hospitalized and disabled Veterans. The Auxiliary
provides the materials and the volunteers who distribute
them. The Veterans are paid a small amount for each flower.
The monies collected are used for the rehabilitation of the
Veterans, Child Welfare Activities and Children and Youth Programs.
All donations are voluntary.
Remember those who gave their lives, those who are injured
and maimed, those who still need our help.
