Life-Saving Defibrillator
Equipment on All Patrol Cars
In the attached photography, Legislator Mangano and Dr. Shelton
demonstrate the new defibrillators.
Nassau County Legislator Edward
P. Mangano (R-Bethpage,
17th L.D.) and the Nassau County
Legislature unanimously passed a
bond ordinance to equip all Nassau
County Police patrol vehicles with
portable Automated External Defibrillators
(A.E.D.). The defibrillator is
an electronic device that helps reestablish
normal contraction rhythms
in the heart of individuals suffering
from a heart attack or stroke.
"Police patrol vehicles are traditionally
the first to arrive at the
scene of an emergency," stated
Legislator Mangano. "Equipping
Nassau County Police patrol cars
with a defibrillator will increase the
survival rate of heart attack and
stroke victims."
The A.E.D. has proven itself extremely
effective in saving lives and
can be operated by virtually anyone.
They are battery powered and
automated to ensure their easy
use. By delivering an electronic
shock to the heart, the A.E.D. restores
the heart beat of a heart attack
or stroke victrm until medical
personnel arrive and can provide
more technical treatments.
Nearly 1,000 Americans suffer
from sudden cardiac arrest daily -
usually away from a hospital. According
to the American Heart Association
(A.H.A.) more than 95% of
them die, in many cases because
defibrillators arrive on the scene too
late. The A.H.A. estimates that up
to 100,000 lives can be saved annually
if A.E.D.S are more widely
available to first-line responders
such as police officers. This prompt
care for heart attack and stroke victims
dramatically reduces damage
to the heart and brain.
"Early defibrillation saves lives,"
said Nassau County Police Academy
Ambulance Medical Technician
Supervisor Ray Shelton. "Having a
defibrillator in every Police Patrol
Car will save a substantial amount
of lives in Nassau County."
Under the provisions of the legislature's
bond ordinance, every
Nassau County police patrol vehicle
will be equipped with a new portable
debrillator. The police patrol vehicles
have been selected to receive the
new defibrillators because these
vehicles are one of the first to arrive
at the scene of an emergency.
Bethpage Historians
Victorious Community
Councit Agenda
At the recent National Day Regional
Competition held at Hofstra
University, several High School students
were recognized for their historical
presentations. The theme of
this year's competition was the impact
of science and technology on
history. Stacey Choi's presentation
explored the history of toys from
ancient times up to today's sophisticated
electronics. Louis Giufrida examined
the role of technology on
improved performance in Olympic
running and swimming. Sandeep
Puhuja, Sami Hadi and Brian O'Neil
looked at the impact of laser technology
in the field of medicine. All
the students are enrolled in Mr. Michael
Spence's Social Science Research
Program at the high school
and will now go on to the State
competition held in Cooperstown,
New York.
