BFD Jrs. Deliver Winning
Raffle Prize
The Bethpage Fire Dept. Juniors deliver a propane BBQ to
Mr. Dunphy of Bethpage. Mr. Dunphy is the winner of a raffle
the Juniors ran to help fund their program. Capt. A.J. Trotter,
Lieut. John Hockenberger and Capt. Sal Mangano were on
hand to congratulate Mr. Dunphy.
On Wednesday, June 11 at 4:45
am, Bethpage Fire Department
dispatcher Chad Casale received a
phone call from Nassau FireCom
reporting a motor vehicle accident
on Hempstead Turnpike east of
Hicksville Road (Rt. 107). The alarm
was immediately transmitted as
"MVA with injury - car under tractor
trailer - driver pinned - Hurst Tool
needed forthwith."
A new four door sedan BMW,
operated by a 24 year old Levittown
man, was traveling westbound on
Hempstead Tpke. (Rt. 24). The
driver apparently fell asleep behind
the wheel and struck the rear of the
slower moving 18 Wheeler. The
truck driver, not realizing that his rig
was struck from behind, turned into
the parking lot of the New York State
department of motor vehicles office.
A debris trail of plastic and car parts
stretching about a hundred feet was
visible from the center lane of the
turnpike into the parking lot.
A hoseline containing foam was
positioned while rescuers from the
Bethpage Fire Department and
Nassau County police emergency
services removed the mangled roof
and left rear door. Hydraulic cutters
and spreaders successfully
accomplished their mission thereby
allowing extrication of the BMW
driver via what was the rear window.
The young man was placed onto a
backboard and transported to the
trauma room at Nassau University
Medical Center in East Meadow via
police ambulance. He was later
released from N.U.M.C. Considering
the type of collision, the driver was
lucky that his injuries were minor.
The driver of the 18 Wheeler was
startled, but unhurt.
Chief James Baudille secured
the operation at 5:20 am. A total of
34 Bethpage volunteers responded
to this pre-dawn alarm in Engine
9055, Rescue 3, Medic Car 9066,
and three ambulances as well as
Nassau County police fromC; "^
precinct, emergency services unit
and emergency ambulance bureau.
