Marking History
On June 22, 2003, the Central Park Historical Society unveiled their second historic landmark erected in
Bethpage. This landmark which is located on Grumman Road East memorializes the role that the Grumman
Corporation played in Bethpage from 1936-1994. It also commemorates the first Grumman airfield and
plant. Bethpage should take great pride in being the birthplace of the Famous F4F-3 Wildcat Navg Fighter.
Pictured above is Lenny Mulqueen, President of the Central Park Historical Society being congratulated by
Legislator Ed Mangano. Aslo pictured from left to right are members of the Central Park Historical Society;

Pictured below are (L to R) Rose Walker, Councilman Joe Muscarella, Central Park Historical Society
President Lenny Mulqueen and Legislator Ed Mangano as he unveils this wonderful historical landmark. The
Central Park Historical Society should be congratulated on their efforts in ensuring that the history of
Bethpage is preserved for generations to come. Their dedication to our community as well as the rich heritage
and history of our town is truly something we all should be thankful for. Special thanks to Lenny Mulqueen
for coming to our resque and helping to identify those pictured in the above photos.
Central Park
Historical
Society Update
June Program - President
Lenny Mulqueen opened the meeting
by welcoming all and acknowledged
The Bethpage Library for
sponsoring the program on VICTORIAN
FLATBUSH with The Central
Park Historical Society. He then gave
an overview of the activities of our
society, he made it clear that you do
not have to be a life long resident of
Bethpage to belong and contribute to
out society, all are welcomed. We
encourage all to lear about the proud
history of Central park/Beth page and
help document the happenings of
today as well as yesterday.
Lenny then introduced Mr.
Ron Schweiger, Brooklyn Borough
Historian. Those of us who did not
grow up in Brooklyn, with its very
proud and interesting history, were
fascinated how knowledgeable ROn
Schweiger is and the wonderful way
he can relate the history of Brooklyn.
Again, Bethpage has grown with
people who have settled in this hamlet
from the boroughs of New York
City. Wednesday night we enjoyed
learning and celebrating Brooklyn
with many of our neighbors.
Ron Schweiger came prepared
with many slides dating back
to the mid 1800's to compare the
yesterday and today of Brooklyn.
Ron captured the beauty and charm
of the varied Victorian Homes, and
some have weathered time with elegance
while others are no longer
standing. No two homes are alike by
plan, you can see Japanese style,
Greek Revival, Swiss Chalet,
Tudors, Colonials, Dutch, Queen
Ann, and the small Victorian homes
were known as California Bungalows
in 1909. the use of fences was practically
nonexistent, the gardens were
beautiful, and the streets remain not
crowded due to off the street parking
and garages for the owners of vehicles.
The display of awnings to keep
the hot summer sun out was common.
Some homes had ballrooms
and basements that took on the elegance
of a night club. All can still be
viewed on the annual walking tour
which takes place the last Sunday in
April with many of the homes open
for the occasion.
Some of the interesting
changes that have taken place in
Brooklyn from the mid 1800's to
present day that Ron addressed: the
toll booth that once gave access to
the village of Flatbush is preserved
and is now located next to the
carousel at Prospect Park (the last
toll was taken in 1893). The famed
