43 May Is Poppy Mont
More Than ft. Sym.6oC.j4. SaCute to Veterans
May is the start of our spring and summer. It is our time for fun & frolic. But remember it is also a time of honoring the
men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives for their Country. By wearing the Poppy on Memorial Day it is our
Nations way of saying we will never forget them.
The American Legion Aux. Archie McCord Unit #86 of Bethpage announces that the Poppy drive will take place
during the entire month of May.
.The Poppy was adopted as the Memorial Flower at the first convention of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1921.
Jt Memorial(Day (Prayer
They SER VED and FOUGHT and DIED
so (hat we might he SAFE and FREE,
Grant them, O LORD, ETERNAL PEACE
and give them "THE VICTORY!"
And in these days of unrest,
filled with grave uncertainty,
Let's not forget THE PRICE THEY PAID
to keep OUR COUNTRY FREE,,.
And so, on this MEMORIAL DAY,
we offer up a prayer-
May the people of ALL NATIONS
he UNITED in THY CARE,
And grant us understanding
and teach us how to live
So we may lose our selfish pride
and learn to love and give,
And keep us ever mindful
of the fighting men who sleep
In Arlington and foreign lands
so we may ever keep
The 'Tight of Freedom" burning
in their honor through the years
And hear their cry for PEACE ON EARTH
resounding in our ears-
Forgive us our transgressions
and "Oh, God, he with us yet"1
Lest in our pride and arrogance
we heedlessly FORGET.
Each Poppy represents A Soldier,
Sailor or Marine
who gave their live:
for this great land
>s
The Poppy was chosen because it represents the small Poppies that blossomed on the battle fields of France after World
War One.
By wearing the Poppy, we show our respect and pay tribute to those Veterans who gave their lives during all our wars.
The Poppies are hand-made by Veterans in Auxiliary-sponsored Workshops. The Craft supplements physical therapy needed b)
the hospitalized and disabled Veterans. The Auxiliary provides the materials and the volunteers who distribute them. The Veterans
are paid a small amount for each flower.
The monies collected are used for the rehabilitation of the Veterans, Child Welfare Activities and Children and Youth Programs.
All donations are voluntary.
Remember whose who gave their lives, those who are injured and maimed, those who still need our help. ..,.. ^
