New Island Hospital Delivers
Flu Shots to Nassau Seniors
Mr. John Bachman (Bethpage), receiving his flu shot from
Karol Scally, RN, a nurse at New Island Hospital.
On December 11, New Island
Hospital of Bethpage administered
more than 150 flu shots to senior
citizens across Nassau County. The
Immunization Program was provided
in cooperation with the Nassau
County Departments of Health and
Senior Citizen Affairs. Flu shots
were dispensed free-of-charge to
Nassau residents over the age of
60.
"In general, seniors tend to have
a lower resistance to infections and
are more likely to be seriously
affected by the flu. We are happy to
be able to provide this service to the
seniors in our community," said
Anthony Carlisi, MD, Co-Director,
Emergency Services at New Island
Hospital.
New Island Hospital is a 223 bed
not-for-profit hospital sponsored by
Winthrop South Nassau University
Health System and Catholic Health
Services of Long Island.

Ospina.
Over 500 toys were donated by
participants at the Greater Long
Island Running Club's 2002 Ho Ho
Ho Holiday Run, held on the roads
of Bethpage on December 21, and
the Club was pleased to once again
turn them over to St. Mary's Children
and Family Services, who distributed
them to some very receptive
children at the annual St. Mary's
Holiday Party on December 26.
St. Mary's is a private, not-for-profit
corporation licensed by the
New York State Office of Children
and Family Services, whose mission
is to offer a "safe haven" for families
in crisis. Through the years it has
evolved into a comprehensive
service provider that addresses the
physical and emotional needs of
children and adolescents who are
victims of abuse, domestic violence,
emotional disturbance, substance
abuse, homelessness and poverty.
It provides residential services for
children at its 64 acre Syosset
campus, at seven community-based
group home settings, supervised
independent living apartments, and
foster boarding homes. St. Mary's
Preventive Service programs
provide support to families whose
children are at risk of foster care
placement.
"The good people at St. Mary's
are doing wonderful work, and the
Running Club is privileged and
proud to be able to help them every
December," observed Run Co-
Director Bob Sherman. "Everyone
who donated a toy at the Run this
year, and the good folks in
Betbnfl.ge who were our hosts, can
take special pride in having made
the Holidays a little bit brighter for a
youngster who is having some
tough times!"
