St. Patrick's Day Parade
Shines Regardless of
Dreary Weather
By Mary McCaffery
Neither rain, nor snow...nor
howling winds
We have had just about every
kind of weather for the Bethpage St.
Patrick's Parade, but this year's
weather put us to the ultimate test.
"What is Mother Nature doing to
us?" I wondered as I looked out the
window Sunday morning. "Testing
our mettle?"
Whatever the reason for the rain,
the stalwart veterans of the VFW
from Bethpage and Massapequa,
Vietnam War, US Submarine
Veterans and our honorees, the
Korean War veterans, braved the
elements to march in this year's
parade.
The Mass before the parade was
a beautiful tribute to the veterans.
Tom Riley, President of the Nassau
County Korean War Veterans and
another member, displayed the
Commemoration Flag on the altar,
before Mass began. The flag is
symbolic of the unified effort of the
United States, the Republic of
Korea and our allies to stop
Communist aggression on the
Korean Peninsula 50 years ago.
Prayers were offered for the men
and women in our armed services
now, for those who fought in the
past and for the families of those
who did not return.
So many marching units dropped
out because of the weather, Bill
