Tournament: 8th Annual Merillon
Girls Softball Tournament - Minor
League Division.
Tournament Highlights:
Congratulations to BBAI's Girls
Softball (Minor League Division)
Tournament team! They were winners
in their division at the 8th Annual Merillon
Girls Softball Tournament on July
12th! The one day tournament consisted
of four games per team, each
game four innings or one hour in
length.
Our girls won all four games
opening up with a victory in the
morning over Port Washington 10-3.
Despite using a restricted flight
"Clincher" Softball, the girls came out
swinging with 13 hits, including a
double and triple by Kristen Claus.
Kristen also combined with Tina
Walsh to hold Port Washington to
only three runs. The winning run was
scored when Melissa Owenburg and
Tina singled. Melissa scored on a single
from Beth Hughes to put them
ahead to stay.
The biggest challenge came in
the second game against a tough
New Hyde Park team. Lauren
Poplawski and Marianne Femminella
combined to pitch a 4-0 shutout. The
offense was supported with a double
and 2 RBI from Marianne, and two hits
and runs scored by Cristina Meyer.
They handily won their third game
with an 11 - 0 shutout victory over Floral
Park. Lauren Walsh led the hitting
attack with two hits, including one
double which scored Christine Wilder
with the winning run after she had
reached on a single.
Lindsay Hall also had two hits and
3 RBI.
The fourth game was a "come
from behind" victory over the host
team Merillon, 8-5. Danielle Sammis
started the rally with a single, and
scored the go ahead run on a single
by Lauren Poplawski. This was a
tough game, since the heat of the day
had started to show its effects on the
girls.
We're very proud of our Minors
Girls Softball Team. They're good
ballplayers and great kids! Keep up
the good work girls!
After a break from the afternoon
sun, and a garden hose "shower" between
games, the girls won their
fourth and final game. They came
from behind, scoring 5 runs in the
bottom of the second Inning, to beat
the host Merillon team 8-5 in three innings.
Bethpage's 11-12 year old girls softball team had a successful day
on Sunday, July 19 at the Eighth Annual Merillon Girls Softball Tournament
held in New Hyde Park. The team, which took first place in
their division, finished with a 3-0-1 record - tops amongst the twelve
teams that competed in the tournament. The team was led by the
strong pitching of Jennifer Rapuano (who had four hits including a
home run), Corinne Owenburg (four hits) and Nicole Leone (three hits).
Annamaria Giannuzzi, who had four hits, drove in the game winning run
in game #2 with a single in the last inning of the game which Bethpage
won 6-5. But the hitting star of the day was Alyssa Imparato who had
six hits, reached base an incredible 9 times in 10 trips to the plate and
' scored eight runs. The girls will compete next in the East Meadow
Tournament to be held in mid-August.
