Discovering So Much Through
"DISCOVERY"
The Summertime is such an enjoyable
time for kids of all ages. After
all, school's out, the weather is warm,
(lately brutally hot) and the schedule
of the day usually revolves around
just plain fun. During the lazy, hazy
days of summer however, some chil-cjren
and parents as well find themselves
scratching their heads in a
search of something a bit more structured
and fun for their kids to participate
in. Many parents find themselves
with kids who are just plain bored.
Well bordem isn't even in the vocabulary
of the children who
attend the Bethpage Discover Programs
'98 Summer session. This
wonderful program which is in it's third
year is making over 200 children and
their parents smile with delight at the
huge selection of activities and
events three days a week for children
in grade Pre-K - 8.
Children sample a variety of activities
including art, music, photo news,
sports and many cultural activities as
well. The program is held at Kramer
Lane School and is run by a dedicated
crew of teachers and staff who
truly make learning fun for everyone.
The day begins at 9am and lasts until
12:30 and each day is chock full of
fun for every child. The theme of this
years "Discovery Program is Native
Americans and on July 13 Robert Vet-ter
an anthropologist and educational
consultant with Native American
studies provided the Discovery kids
with a phenomenal display by erecting
a full size tee-pee. The children
learned Native American dances and
songs and Mr. Vetter who has done
extensive fieldwork among the Indian
tribes of Western Oklahoma, told all
the students about many Native
Americans traditions and rituals.
The children danced and sang
and thoughroughly enjoyed their day
discovering Native American culture.
The piscover y Program also
hosted ari open house on July 23
where parents were invited to take a
peak at all the discoveries their children
are making each day at the Discovery
Program.
Congratulations to the entire Discovery
Staff and Board who truly
should take pride in knowing that over
200 children are having a wonderful
summer and best of all they are
learning so much without ever realizing
it! They've discovered that learning
really can be fun and that is a truly
valuable and priceless discovery. / / / ,
