Eagles Soar In Bethpage
Bethpage Eagle Scout Project Helps Clean Up Bethpage
The rank of Eagle is the highest
rank which can be obtained by a Boy
Scout. One of the final steps in the
process is for the scout to formulate a
service project. In recent times when
three of the Boy Scouts from Troop
604 were deciding where they wanted
to do their projects, they chose the
community where they reside,
Bethpage. Michael DeMaria and the
scouts restored the park behind the
library and made an area where the
residents could sit and enjoy our
community. He received his Eagle
badge shortly thereafter. Eric
Schlameuss and the scouts have
been working to restore the old
Stymus cemetery located at Revere
Avenue. Last summer, Michael
Hoffman worked with several young
men to restore the Firemen's
Memorial at Wantagh Avenue and
Hicksville Road. The monument
honors firemen from Nassau County.
It was placed there subsequent to the
death of two of our firemen who were
killed in a fire at a pool store on
Hempstead Turnpike. Through the
years, the monument area began to
look poorly and needed some work to
bring it back to its original condition.
Michael and the scouts cleared the
area, planted numerous bushes,
installed an irrigation system, laid
down grass and made it look
beautiful. It is a lasting monument to
all our volunteer firemen of Nassau
County who give of themselves to
help our communities. Our firemen
take time from their personal lives
and their families so that we can feel
safer. This monument is a tribute to
them.
Much thanks should go to Michael
and.the young men who worked to
"give back" to our community.
Additionally, thanks go to Warex
Terminal (who owns the Citgo Station
adjacent to the monument) for their
support of this project to the
Bethpage Chamber of Commerce,
and the Bethpage Rotary for their
financial support, to Emil's Nursery
for the donation of the materials and
bushes needed to do the project and
finally to the Bethpage Fire
Department for their support of this
very worthwhile project.
To the Scouts of Troop 604, thanks
for all your hard work and good luck
becoming Eagle Scouts.
