Community Happenings:
Community Council
Adgenda
Touches on Multitude
of Bethpage Issues On Tuesday Feb. 2, 1998 the
Bethpage Community Council
hosted a meeting on community issues.
The first speaker to address
the members were Extended Stay
of America who is seeking to construct
a 104 room hotel on the
Grumman property. The proposed
site is located just passed the Credit
Union on South Oyster Bay Road,
the three story structure is intended
to service the corporate clients of
the Grumman property, Tilles property
in Woodbury, and the Plainview
office and industrial park. Extended
Stay of America stated that their hotel
is "modeled after the Marriot
Residence Inn which enjoys the
highest occupancy rate on Long
Island. Extended Stay of America
seeks a special use permit to operate
the hotel. Presently, the Town
Board has reserved decision on this
matter.
The next speakers were representatives
of the Korean Presbyterian
Church which seeks to purchase
a 60,000 square ft former
Grumman building located off the
Cherry Ave. Extension, just behind
the Robert Plan building. The
Church seeks a change of zone
and variances for less than required
parking and construction of 78 ft.
Steeple and cross. Church representatives
explained that there are
approximately 220 member and the
106 existing parking spots are ample
for their off peak hour services.
In addition room exists for an additional
220 parking spaces that will
remain landbanked until required.
The speaker noted that while the
property will be removed from the
tax roles, the church would impact
the community less then an office
building in areas such as less traffic
generation. County legislator Ed
Mangano has voiced his concerns
to the Town Board regarding granting
such exceptions prior to the
proposed Cherry Ave. Extension
being reviewed by the community.
Presently, the Town of Oyster Bay
Board has reserved decision on this
matter.
The next speaker was Tom
Frost who is heading up a community
committee to make suggestions
regarding the Pine Ave. School.
Tom reported that his committee
has performed an extensive study
of the structure and noted the dangers
that exist at that site. Tom presented
detailed photos of the structural
problems at the school. In addition
the committee noted problems
with roofs and windows
throughout the district. The committee
is studying the possibility of
asking the community to approve a
bond ordinance to take down the
Pine Ave. School and address other
capital improvements. The committee
meets at the high school. If your
interested in attending a meeting of
the committee please contact
Bethpage schools for meeting date
which are also posted on the high
school sign located on Stewart and
Cherry Aves.
Postmaster Mike Silvestri who
commented on the Post Office
plans to build a new post office on
the Nick Rogers property on
Hicksville Road. The Postmaster
stated that attempts were made to
find the required two acre site near
the existing facility. The Postmaster
agreed to consider the possibility of
locating a Post Office Annex in a
storefront or rent space form an existing
store in order to keep a presence
in our downtown business district.
Connie Doolann presented
neighborhood concerns over the
warehouses located off Lexington
Ave. Residents are concerned with
the structural integrity of the structure
as well as it becoming a haven
for vagrants. Carolann Catapano
and Teri Black of Century 21 Meto
reported that the property is listed
for sale and there has been some
interest in a residential and/or senior
housing development, however no
offers have been accepted to the
best of their knowledge. Corinie and
neighbors will seek assistance from
the Town of Oyster Bay Officials regarding
the Status of the structures.
