Brettons Benefit Bowl Raises $30,000 Plus for Needy Bethpage Families
The Bretton's Deli team take a moment to say "cheese."
Paul Hoffman of the Boy Scouts, Dolly Argento and Chamber President Dennis
Brady came out to show support for the game.
The Sluggin' B.K. Sweeney's crew came out on top with a score of 8-6....with
a little help from some inspirational players.
The referees look mighty official.
The Vietnam Veterans of America pose
Bretton and Pastor James Berry.
With the holidays nipping at our
backs it is heartbreaking to hear about
families who are in need. Families,
who, aren't able to feed their families...
aren't able to put a roof over
their children's heads or even warm
coats to help them make it through
the coldness of winter. Most of us
think about these families and never
realize that we, right here, in Bethpage
have so many families in that
situation.
Financial difficulties due to job
loss, divorce or illness leave so many
of our neighbors feeling hopeless
and helpless, especially around the
. holidays.
That is why the Bretton's Benefit
Bowl is so important and this year's
game, which was held on Dec. 13 at
Bethpage High School will help fill the
needs of so many through the generosity
of so many. This game, which
is the 11th game, attracted well over
250 people and best of all raise well
over $30,000. This money is then distribute
to those in need (families who
have either written letters expressing
their problems or who have been re-with
Legislator Ed Mangano, Gary
ferred to the Brettons committee by
one of our churches or synagogues.)
And that is why this game is so special
and has such and impact on so many
lives in Bethpage.
The game once again had the
Bretton Bombers pitted against the
Slugging Sweeney's team ended in a
8-6 win for Sweeney's although Gary
Bretton, game founder, has said that
Sweeny's win was attributed to the
"divine" "inspiration" of Father Kevin
who scored the winner 2 point conversion.
But, as I have said before it's not
the score of the game that matters.
Everyone each year WINS. Those
generous folk who donate to tfie
game win just knowing they've made
a difference and those in need win
because their holiday and lives have
been touch by Angeles who live right
in Bethpage.
A huge thank you goes out to all
those who help so much each year in
making sure this game is as successful
as it has always been. And a special
thank you, to a special man, a
Special Santa named Gary Bretton.
