St. Martin of Tours Church Renovation Completed

By Mary McCaffrey 1
Like so many of the parishioners
from St. Martin of Tours Church,
I greeted the news of the renovations
and expansion with a mix of
nostalgia and anticipation. To the
parishioners of St. Martin's, the
church is a sacred place - our spiritual
home. It is here that some of
life's most precious moments have
been celebrated and sometimes
grieved. Couples from Bethpage,
Levittown, Plainedge and Farming-dale
have exchanged marriage
vows in front of St. Martin's altar.
Family and friends have come here .
to say their final "good-byes" to a
deceased relative, neighbor or
friend - to find consolation and spiritual
support in the Mass of the
Resurrection.
Thousands of children have
been baptized In the baptistery or,
under the new liturgy, at the main
altar. Many of those same children
went on to receive their First Communion
and other sacraments,
growing from spiritual infancy to
adulthood within the same parish.
wooden screen designed and
contractor.
But, after 70 years, St. Martin's
Church - like any home - needed
renovation. To the delight of many
parishioners, the committee of parishioners
and clergy and the architect
took special care to retain as
much of the original church as was
possible.
The stained glass windows
which were all donated by families
with roots in Bethpage have been
re-leaded, cleaned and refitted into
the new church. Though all the
pews look like new, the ones in the
nave of the church are actually the
old pews cleaned, polished and returned
in beautiful condition. The
rest are new.
Many of the new features of the
church have been designed and
made by local artists, engineers, architect
vendors, and builders. Jennifer
Baldwin Schaefer, a Long Island
resident, designed the crucifix
above the altar and the mosaic
panel on the baptism font. John

BETHPAGE DAY
A FIVE STAR EVENT
Wonderful Weather +
Enthusiastic Community = A very
Successful Bethpage Day 1996!
The Central Park Historical
Society welcomed the many
organizations, schools, churches
and merchants who came
together in a great community
spirit! We salute all the people of
Bethpage who participated in the
day by cheering on all who
marched in the parade, supported
the organizations, met our local
political leaders, were educated
by the displays set up by our
Water District and Fire
Department, who enjoyed the local
crafters who displayed their
works of art and love and met the
merchants who displayed and
sold their merchandise. In the
future, when you need to make a
purchase, check out how our local
merchants can serve you!
The excitement of Homecoming
is a time to remember. When you
first wore that football uniform or
cheerleader skirt and sweater, and
how proud you felt! Homecoming
is a time to meet the football stars
of the future and the girls who
cheer them on. Then to be a part
of all the action and to cheer for
your team!
A very special 'Thanfcfi&u-to
the members of the Central Park
Historical Society for their support
