SUPERMARKET COLLAPSE
A Challenge For Bethpage
Tactical Rescue Team
The Blizzard of '96 had dumped
record;amounts of snow on Long
Island. By January twelfth, life was
getting back to normal, but a rain
storm was about to create new
problems for fire-rescue personnel-

At 5:15 pm fire communications
dispatcher Jack Meister received
several phone calls reporting a
building collapse at the Waid-baum's
supermarket on Hicksville
Road in North Massapequa. The
North Massapequa Volunteer Fire
Department was immediately
alerted and advised that numerous
persons were trapped under the
wreckage. NMFD Chief John Bove
initiated rescue operations and
requested mutual aid from surrounding
communities. Since
both North Massapequa and Bethpage
use the same dispatcher, the
Bethpage F.D. was quickly notified
to respond with 3 ambulances
and a heavy rescue unit. The
B.F.D.'s Tactical Rescue Team
was also activated. This would be
their first major assignment since
they were organized in 1993. A
total of 37 Bethpage firefighters
would operate at the collapse
scene providing emergency medical
care, rescue or other support
services.
Several victims were extricated
by quick thinking NMFD firefighters
and brought to local hospitals.
The Bethpage F.D. ambulances
transported five patients, including
an infant. Luckily, all injuries
were relatively minor. The Bethpage
crew joined with rescue
teams from North Bellmore and
Hicksville to search void areas and
other confined spaces created by
the "lean-to" type roof collapse.
To prevent further collapse,
lumber was brought to the scene
to provide shoring. Bethpage FD
Assistant Chief Peter Bianco and
Firefighter/EMT Ned Jensen were
hoisted to the roof via a hugh
construction crane. Their objective
was to secure a; 9.QQ0 pound
air conditioning tffrtt which threatened
to cause a secondary roof
collapse. The operation continued
until after 2 am.
The firefighters remaining in
Bethpage were busy also. There
was another reported collapse at
320 Broadway, an ambulance call
at Pudgies, smoke in a house on
Hahn Ave. and a basement fire on
Birch Place. Bethpage received
assistance from Syosset, Plain-view,
Westbury and Levittown.
