VOL. 30 NO. 41
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
ZONE HEADED FOR
BETHPAGE
Oct. 18-24, 1996 40 CENTS
While standing in front of the former Grumman Corp.
headquarters in Bethpage, Senator Marcellino, second on right,
announces the signing of his legislation creating State
Economic Development Zones with the assistance of
Assemblyman Marc Herbst (far left), Nassau County Executive
Thomas Gulotta and Nassau County Legislator Edward
Mangano (far right).
Legislation sponsored by
Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R-Syosset)
to create seven new
economic development zones
specifically targeted for areas
which have been adversely
affected by a reduction in military
spending has been signed into law
by Governor Pataki. Assemblyman
Thomas P. DiNapoli of Great Neck
sponsored the bill in the
Assembly.
"With Federal initiatives to
reduce military spending our
once-strong defense industry in
New York State has slowly
declined. As home to both
Grumman-Bethpage and
Calverton, Long Islanders have
been forced to bear the brunt of
this loss," Senator Marcellino said.
Under the terms of this new law,
which will take effect immediately,
economic development zone
status will be more attainable for
areas on Long Island, and
throughout the entire state, that
have been affected by military
downsizing.
This law will provide those areas
adversely affected by reductions
in military spending with the
opportunity to obtain economic
development zone status, allowing
them to facilitate environmentally
safe commercial and industrial
development. Under current law
businesses operating in economic
development zones are given tax
breaks, including relief from
corporate franchise tax provisions,
real property tax rates and utility
rates.
"This new law will not only
attract new businesses and jobs
to those areas affected by military
downsizing, but it will stimulate
additional business for
surrounding area merchants, as
workers will again patronize their
establishments," Senator
Marcellino said.
