EQUESTRIAN EXHIBITS AT
BETHPAGE STATE PARK
Polo and equestrian exhibits will
provide family fun Sunday, June 9
at Bethpage Park as the 1996 Long
Island Belmont Stakes Festival
comes to a close.
Trick riding by John Monaco of
Brooklyn, jumping by Ken Hart of
Old Brookville and a grooming
demonstration by Diane Gormly of
Muttontown are part of the agenda,
as well as a Spanish-American War
reenactment by the Rough Riders
and a performance by a musical drill
team.. .... ,. . . : } s
Dee Muma of Riverhead will
present a dressage exhibition, riding
to music with a commentary to explain
the complexities of high level
dressage, a French word meaning
training and used t denote classical
horsemanship. Muma will be riding
Wilder Kaiser, a bay Oldenburg
gelding imported from Germany.
"The more people who get a positive
introduction to horses, the better,"
she said.
Additional exhibitors are expected
to be added to the program.
Pdlo begins at 3 p.m., but Peter
MacGillycuddy of Roslyn, co-organizer
along with Dick London of
Smithtown, suggests arriving at the
park around noon to watch the exhibition
horses warming up.
"I'm very excited to be part of
something that will focus attention
on Long Island and the horse industry,"
said MacGillycuddy.
In the early morning and late afternoon,
the Serena's Song hot air
balloon, the world's only wheelchair-accessible
balloon, will be on hand
to give wheejchair-bound youngsters
a ride. The racehorse Serena's
Seng was named for a disabled
chid whose father raised funds to
develop the balloon.
This is the Belmont Stakes Festival's
inaugural year. "It could well
become an awakening of tourism
for all of Long Island as we prepare
for the 21st century," said Dick London,
a Suffolk County planning
board commissioner.
