A§ i t FALLS! Shown above as the demolition crew actually split the
brick portion ofthe apartment building in half.
On Tuesday March 12, a long standing bit of Bethpage History
crumbled to the ground as the old Apartment Building on Powell
Avenue and Broadway was demolished as part of the construction
process of the new Central Park Estates Senior Housing Complex.
Onlookers marveled as the demolition crew, bit by bit, destroyed
one of the oldest buildings in Bethpage...a building however that
needed much repair and was at times even referred to as an
eyesore. While some were elated to finally see the old building go,

BOOM! The long standing apartment building stands no more.
many were saddened to see a piece of Bethpage History crumble to
the ground. In fact, many onlookers took bits and fragments of
bricks and wood to serve as a reminder of this building as well as a
souvenir of a time long past. Old rusted radiators, wood detailed
with ornate moldings and even tin from a once elaborate ceiling
were all part of the huge pile of rubble after the building made its
final crash to the ground.
And while many look forward to the beautiful appearance of the
new Senior project, I must say it was sad to see the "old girl go!"
Marty Lyons to
Visit Bethpage Schools
Next Wednesday, March 20, a
unique program will occur at Bethpage
High School centering around
the theme of human relations.
Two keynote speakers will address
the student body. Dr. Robert
Ricken of the World of Difference
Institute of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'Nai B'rith wil present a
keynote assembly for grades 9 and
10, stressing diversity and prejudice
reduction. Marty Lyons, a former
N.Y. Jets football player and founder
of the Marty Lyons Foundation
and Marty Kiffel, President of the
Marty Lyons Foundation, will co-lead
a keynote assembly for grades
11 and 12. The Marty Lyons Foundation
has been established for the
purpose of providing "special
wishes" to terminally ill children.
The Human Relations Day
Committee, . consisting of Ellen
Mayer, social worker; Pamela
Puglisi, guidance counselor; Linda
Candela, art chairperson; Caroline
LaVelle, Student Civic Association
advisor; and Dr. John McCarthy, assistant
principal, is very excited
about this program which will include
30 workshops. Topics such as
Sexual Harassment in our Schools,
The Holocaust, Prejudiced in America
and Teen Violence are just a
few of the possible selections chosen
by the students.
The goal of this year's day is to
create an understanding that people
who are of different cultures,
sexual orientation and/or religion
can work and live harmoniously in
the school and in the community. A
proactive program at Bethpage
High School on accepting people's
differences is timely.
