The American Legion Aux Archie
McCord Unit #8Q of Bethpage
announces that the Poppy drive will
take place during the entire month of
May.
The Poppy was adopted as the
memorial flower at the first
convention of the ladies auxiliary in
1921.
The Poppy was chosen because it
represents the small poppies that
blossomed on the battle fields of
France after the World War II.
By wearing the Poppy, we show
our respect and pay tribute to those
Veterans who gave their lives during
all our wars.
. The Poppies are all hand-made by
Veterans in Auxiliary-sponsored
Workshops. The Craft supplements
physical therapy needed by the
hospitalized and disabled Veterans.
The Auxiliary provides the materials
and the volunteers who distribute
them. The Veterans are paid a small
amount for each flower.
The monies collected are used for
the rehabilitation of the Veterans.
Child Welfare Activities and Children
Youth Programs.
All donations are voluntary!
Remember those who gave their
lives, those who are injured and
maimed, those who still need our
help.

ROTARY GREETS SISTER CLUB:
MEXICO COMES TO BETHPAGE
Legislator Edward Mangano, (R-Bethpage, 17th L.D.), (third from right),
presents President Alfonso Alarcon of the Rotary Club of Tprreon, Mexico
with a citation commending their club for acting as liaison in enabling
the Bethpage Rotary to build a soccer field for orphans in Torreon,
as well as acknowledging their assistance in helping save the
life of a Mexican child in connection with Bethpage's efforts in the Gift
of Life program.
Standing left to right are Jaime Ortiz, a long-standing supporter of the
Gift of Life program, and incoming Chairperson of the international
Committee of Bethpage; Chris Drake, President of Bethpage Rotary;
Hector Guerrero, Fernando Campos and President Alfonson Alarcon,
senior members of the Rotary Club of Torreon, Mexico; Legislator Edward
Mangano, past President of Rotary who initiated contact with Torreon
and spearheaded matching grants which made the building of the
soccer field possible; Luz Rosenthal, International Chairperson who
was the U.S. contact for the successful open heart operation of the
Mexican Child; and Dan Carroll, fund-raiser. Missing from the picture is
Dr. Hugh Ashford of Bethpage Rotary who also has been very instrumental
in the Gift of Life Program.
Three members of the Torreon
Rotary Club in Torreon, Mexico recently
visited the Bethpage Rotary
Club. Alfonso Alarcon, Hector Guerrero
and Fernando Campos brought
their thanks for all the work that the
Bethpage Rotary has been doing
for their Mexican community.
International service is one of
the four 'avenues' of Rotary, and
this year international service has
been spearheaded by Luz Rosenthal,
Chairperson of the International
Committee. Under the leadership,
Bethpage Rotary has brought
a fifth child to Long Island, this time
from Torreon, for open heart surgery
through the Gift of Life program.
Other members very active in
the program include Jaime Ortiz, Dr.
Hugh Ashford, and Dan Carroll. In
addition, the Bethpage Rotary Club
has sent part of a truckload of
sheets and other, supplies to an orphanage
in Torreon* and earlier had
raise funds for the building of a soccer
field for those same orphans. All
of these efforts were applauded by
the three emissaries from Mexico.
