HANDS-WARM HEARTS!!
Bretton's Eighth Annual Football Game For Needy Raises $25,000 For Bethpage
Saying that last Sunday was
cold... well, that is simply an
understatement. Dec. 10
brought with it clear skies, frigid
temperatures and a wind chill that
made it feel like 10 degrees below
zero. What was truly special about
December 10 was that on that day
Bethpage hosted the Eighth
Annual Bretton's Benefit Bowl.
This game spearheaded by Gary
Bretton each year raises money
for Bethpage's needy families.
Since it's inception the game has
raised over $130,000 in eight
years. An impressive total, yet
what truly is more impressive
about this game is the way it
motivates and touches so many
residents and merchants.
This year the Bretton Bombers
faced B.K. Sweeney's and Bretton's
lost to the tough Sweeney
team by a score of 9-0. We sat
therewith blankets, cushions and
so much thermal underwear on my
entire family looked like scarecrows,
but this game is one I could
never miss... freezing or not it is
a Bethpage tradition too special to
let slide.
The game began with an impressive
rendition of our National
Anthem sung by Mr. John Ami-rante
whose powerful voice could
be heard through the Howie Vogts
football field (by the way congrat-ulationsto
Howie Vogts on being
1995 Football Coach of the Year,
well deserved I might add.) And
the entertainment continued during
halftime with the wonderful
dance moves of the Norma School
of Dance Dancers. I myself give
these girls so much credit—my
teeth were chattering just looking
at their legs and feet.
What is so special about this
game is that there are so many
winners. The entire Brettons team
as well as B.K. Sweeney's team
should be commended for their
dedication, commitment and bravery
in the face of ol' man winter
-THEY ARE WINNERS.
The community of Bethpage
and our less fortunate residents
receive such benefit from this
game. Those not needing assist-

Brrrrfect Day For Football

I had a choice to either stay
warm at home watching the Jets
lose another game or brave the -
6 degrees of bone chilling weather
to photograph Bretton's 8th
Annual Benefit Football Game for
Bethpage's needy families. I chose
the latter.
While Bretton's Deli, with their
matching uniforms, looked like the
team to beat, B.K. Sweeney's a
ragtag array of colorful jerseys,
was the force to stop. Scoring was
as hard as the frozen ground. Paul
Selhorn, Bethpage's 1991 All
County Football and Lacrosse
Champion, scored the game's only
touchdown for B.K. Sweeney's.
At the titans of the "freeze bowl"
battled four hand-numbing quarters,
B.K. Sweeney's team supplied
most of the offense. Kevin

For the eighth straight year the Bretton's Bowl raises over $25,000
to help those less fortunate. Their tough opponent B.K. Sweeney's
wins with a 9-0 score although the winner in this game is truly Bethpage.
