VOGTS MAKES HISTORY
Previous record holder as the winningest football coach on Long
Island, Don Snyder, retired from Farmingdale H.S. congratulated
coach Vogts
The Golden Eagles football
team made history last Saturday as
they beat Sewanhaka 41 to 0 before
a stand full of excited fans. The
win wasn't that unusual though, as
it was just a continuation of what
has been going on for the last 2
years.
Over these last 2 years Bethpage
has won 22 straight games and 2
Long Island championships. History
enough! But even the way they won
the L.I. championships was
history making. Bethpage wis the
1st team to win LI Championships
in two different Conferences,
Conf. IV in '93 and Conf. Ill in '94.
So Saturday's win, their second
of the season (they beat Glen Cove
31 to 2) doesn't seem that important
or historic by itself, and it isn't.
However, when you lump those
2 wins together with the 22 other
straight wins, you get the longest
active winning streak in N.Y. State.
The best thing that you get though
is coach Howie Vogts becoming
the winningest football coach in
L.I. history. This string of 24
straight wins brought him up to
238 wins over his 43 years of
coaching. Don Snyder, the
legendary coach from Farming-dale
H.S., who had the previous
record of 237 wins was at the game
to congratulate his longtime friend
on his "great accomplishment."
All of Bethpage congratulates
you, coach Vogts, not just for
setting a record, but for helping
our boys become men. For setting
an example of perserver-ance.
For showing them the love
of the game and the joy of belonging
to a team with pride and
determination. Congratulations to
all the coaches who have contributed
to this accomplishment. Keep
it going!
