Iwebe Year OU GirlMaks Heartfelt
Donation to SUmiw is Hospital
A trip to the mall was not the
first thing on 12-year old Sara
Strilcic's mind when she saved all
of the babysitting money she
earned in one year. Instead, the
Old Bethpage youngster decided
to donate her savings to St. Francis
Hospital in honor of her grandfather
who had two cardiac
bypasses at the Hospital when she
was very young. "Pop Pop Bernie,"
as Sara refers to him, was surprised
when he was told about
Sara's donation, but said he could
not be happier or more proud of
his young granddaughter.
This is a "very special donation,"
*>said Lucille Paolillo Kissane, Vice
President for Development, St.
Francis Hospital. "Coming from
the heart of a 12-year-old who
loves her grandfather so much,
this gift is certainly unique and one
that the entire St. Francis Hospital
family can appreciate."
"Pop Pop Bernie," also known
as Bernard Barth of Woodbury,
had his last bypass when Sara was
only six years old. While she did
not understand the complexity of
care he received then, her mother,
Lynn, said she recently explained
to Sara the "great job St. Francis
Hospital did in making him better."
Sara promptly informed her
parents that she wanted to donate
$145 to St. Francis Hospital to
thank the Hospital for giving her
and her grandfather the time
together which they value so
much. Her parents said she
realizes how lucky she is and are
proud of her decision.
"I love my grandfather very
much," Sara said. "We have fun
together and I'm happy that St.
Francis Hospital made him better."
Barth echoes this appreciation
for the quality care he received at
the Hospital: "For me, the advantage
of coming to St. Francis
Hospital for the bypasses is the
chance it has given to me to be
with all my grandchildren now."
Family has always been important
to Barth, particularly since the
loss of his brother during WWII.
His brother's death came on his
birthday, a date he no longer
celebrates. And now, decades
later, he considers July 6—the date
he survived his first open heart
surgery—as his new birthday.
Barth, who is young at heart,
explained, "I'm only 14 years old,"
referring to the years following his
bypass surgery. "The years since
my surgeries have been gravy," he
said with a youthful enthusiasm.
