SEPTEMBER 15-21, 1995 40 CENTS
Polo at Bethpage State Park:
MORE THAN TUST HORSING AROUND
Revlon's Christian Laprida is ready to unleash a shot as White Birch's Peter Brant and Adolfo Cambioso try to defend.
White Birch held off a charging
Revlon team, 12-10, to capture the
1995 U.S. Handicap Polo Title.
Undefeated in their own divisions,
these two high scoring teams met
at Bethpage State Park this past
Thursday. Emotions ran high as
White Birch and Revlon attacked
each other's goals in end-to-end
action. Nobody would be accused
of not giving 110 percent.
As the first three chuckers
melted away, White Birch's comfortable
lead of 6-3 would be in
jeopardy with the help of a disputed
penalty call. With less than
one minute remaining before the
half, the solid Revlon team took
.a,c|YcMitagQ and closed, the ,gap ,6-
5 at the sound of the horn.
An emotional Peter Brant
charged off the field in a tirade and
vowed not to return to the game.
The "officiating @ # $ %" was his
kind comment about the referees.
Dejected, but still winning mind
you, the rest of the White Birch
players silently looked on. Like
in many other arenas of life,
cooler heads prevailed and Peter
Brant would play the remainder of
the match.
The second half saw the teams
exchanging scores, setting the
stage for a dramatic finish. With
only about 30 seconds left in the
match, White Birch was leading
11T10., RevJoo'.s onJy.Qhance.fpr.a,
tie was extinguished by a penalty
against them. White Birch
•knocked in the insurance goal to
win the 1995 U.S. Handicap Final,
12-10.
We congratulate both teams for
a memorable game on a beautiful
day. Both teams should be proud
of their accomplishment, especially
White Birch's MVP winner
Adolfo Cambioso, Jr., scoring six
goals in the match; the game's
high scorer with seven goals,
Tomas Llorente from the Revlon
team; and finally, unique to the
sport of Polo, Revlon's MVP winning
polo pony, Mercedes, who
helped pilot Tomas Llorente.
,, The .next step ,is -the, start ,of. the
U.S. Open matches to commence
on Saturday, September 9. With
seven teams in contention, the
action should be exciting. Maybe
White Birch can sweep the two
titles, or Outback's Memo Gracida,
a twelve-time U.S. Open champ,
can get his thirteenth win for this
powerhouse team, or American,
Mike Azzaro can propel Pegasus
to victory. Whatever the outcome,
you are invited to witness the
explosive sport of Polo at Bethpage
State Park. The 1995 U.S.
Open will be held at Bethpage
State Park on Sunday, September
24, at 3:00 p.m.
