It was a fire like one we had never
seen before. Flames racing to the sky
and illuminating the night better than
any light ever could. Smoke filling the
air making it almost impossible to
breathe, and destruction...the devastating
destruction of six thousand
acres of Pine Barrens in West
Hampton.
Last week Long Island as well as
the world witnessed the Suffolk
County Wild Fires which began on
Thursday August 24 at 1:00 pm at
Suffolk Community College and
spread to West Hampton destroying
everything in its path including a
lumber yard and three homes while
damaging others. This fire
demanded the attention of over
2,000 volunteer firefighters as well
as the National Guard and even the
air help of the C-130, helicopters and
5 fixed wing aircrafts.
Fire departments from all over
Long Island and even New York City
raced to the scene to aid the 'Hot
Shots' (special force firefighters) in
putting out this huge blaze. In fact
even our own Bethpage Fire Department
responded to aid in the fight
wi th their 'stump jumper'. This I might
add was not an easy task as the fire
took nearly one full week to contain
and as of this printing has not yet
been termed "totally extinguished."
The area remains extremely danger-mmm
ous because of the dry conditions
caused by the hot weather and lack
of rain.
While reports have stated that
there was a communications problem
at the site and even a chain of
command problem it certainly must
be said that the 2,000 plus firefighters
who came to the scene that
night are all heroes. No advanced
communications system could have
ever replaced the blood, sweat and
tears that went Into extinguishing the
blaze. For it was contained by the
dedication of all those brave firefighters
who raced Into a wall of flames
and gave...and gave...and gave until
| they were assured that the fire was
halted from spreading.
1 have thought a lot about what
it takes to risk your life and jump into
6,000 acres of flames. What it takes
is a true heartfelt dedication to serve
and that is precisely what each and
everyone of those firefighters has...A
DEDICATION TO SERVE.
We here in Bethpage should be
especially proud as our team was
there day and night battling the blaze
' and even when it seemed impossible
they fought a little harder and gave
a little more of themselves. We at
the Bethpage Tribune salute the
efforts of all firefighters and especially
our own heroic Bethpage Fire
